But at least Coeurls cut to the chase. Those Land Rays are truly sadistic, torturing you as much as possible before going in for the kill.

Your best bet is using shields and hope they block hits often enough to prevent your party getting stun-locked to death or insta-killed. Otherwise, any enemy with a status effect on their hits WILL 100% inflict it after touching any character.
I don't know how it was in the original game or PS1/GBA/PSP, but the Ancient Sword is absolutely broken as a result, letting you curse every single enemy, including the final boss, making them mega weak and take tons more damage.
It must have been an oversight--'cuz there's no way this would have been intended. But, oh well, I used it to my advantage, lol. That ancient sword got me out of a lot of tricky situations!
That said, I have a very odd situation with memory with these. I played FF1 once ever before this remaster, on the PS1 almost 20 years ago. I remembered most of it. I played FF2 after it, yet remember almost nothing.
Even at 99 agility I'm still getting brutal ambushes. Can't even imagine how painful the game would be for anyone who didn't focus on evasion from like the start of the game. Preemptive strikes have saved me more times than I can count.
One tip though: agility equipment stacks in this version, unlike in the original. +30 agility on Firion with gear is huge. Take into account the permanent crystal buff on top of that, that’s 40 agility for free.
And the crystal buffs affect the whole party now instead of a random party member, so that’s nice too. You’re guaranteed to get it on Firion instead of having to save-scum.
