Broken Status Effects
Anyone else playing this for the first time frustrated by the 100% chance of status ailments landing on your party from enemies? I'm just getting perma-stunned and wishing I didn't waste so much time playing a broken game.

But at least Coeurls cut to the chase. Those Land Rays are truly sadistic, torturing you as much as possible before going in for the kill.

I wish someone would just fix this in a mod... I can't even enjoy the game like this. It's crazy!

At least it cuts both ways. I put Dark Emperor to sleep and whacked him with the blood sword until he went down.

He can be put to sleep!? Whoa...

What's worse is that there's no item/weapon to protect you against status effects and Barrier is absolutely trash.

I was intrigued to learn that it's supposed to block status effects, I somehow never realized it before. Does it not actually work, or something?

As I understand it, weapons that inflict statuses benefit from the same coding that these enemies do. As long as the hit lands, so does the status.

Wow... seems kinda broken. >_>

There are no items to protect you. To be more specific, there is a few rare ones (such as ribbons), but you can get them only late in the game. So, since they protect you up to lv 8 magic or something only, and you deal with enemies using higher magic, they are virtually useless. And if it wasn't all, they won't apply to physical damage at all.

Your best bet is using shields and hope they block hits often enough to prevent your party getting stun-locked to death or insta-killed. Otherwise, any enemy with a status effect on their hits WILL 100% inflict it after touching any character.

They only way I was able to beat the Lamia Queen + Coeurl fight was to use a Betrayal Fang to get them to kill each other.

Yeah, as mentioned, the status effects applying on hit 100% of the time goes for your own weapon effects, too, lol.

I don't know how it was in the original game or PS1/GBA/PSP, but the Ancient Sword is absolutely broken as a result, letting you curse every single enemy, including the final boss, making them mega weak and take tons more damage.

It must have been an oversight--'cuz there's no way this would have been intended. But, oh well, I used it to my advantage, lol. That ancient sword got me out of a lot of tricky situations!

I can't believe I don't remember this from the PS1 version.

That said, I have a very odd situation with memory with these. I played FF1 once ever before this remaster, on the PS1 almost 20 years ago. I remembered most of it. I played FF2 after it, yet remember almost nothing.

The problem with the ambushes is that there’s no counter, no preparation that you can do before battle. If you could cast shell and barrier outside of battle, or if the equipment to protect against status effects wasn’t bugged, at least you’d have some way of MAYBE dealing with them. Currently it’s just a slow, drawn-out guaranteed wipe and it’s not fun. I’d love to see a mod that fixes this balance issue.

Even at 99 agility I'm still getting brutal ambushes. Can't even imagine how painful the game would be for anyone who didn't focus on evasion from like the start of the game. Preemptive strikes have saved me more times than I can count.

One tip though: agility equipment stacks in this version, unlike in the original. +30 agility on Firion with gear is huge. Take into account the permanent crystal buff on top of that, that’s 40 agility for free.

And the crystal buffs affect the whole party now instead of a random party member, so that’s nice too. You’re guaranteed to get it on Firion instead of having to save-scum.
