1-2: Pixel Remaster
3-4: 3D Remake
5: Old PC
6: Pixel Remaster
The maps and autobattle are just a crutch to coddle lazy kids. (Except in FFII. Using the maps there is acceptable)
Cutting out so much content is unacceptable, and I expect Squenix to eventually restore it either with an update, or even paid DLC if they ever want a cent out of me again.
FF1 and 2, the PSP versions are better.
FF3, I like the 3D remake better.
FF4, the PSP version and 3D remake version both have their perks. But the 3D version of After Years is disappointing. Why the hell is tail equipment not included in NG+? There's literally no reason to grind for rare stuff.
5 and 6, the older Steam/GBA versions are vastly superior, with the reshade mods to remove the blur filter, anyway. But even then, the horrible mobile menus are atrocious.
I need to look into mods for V and VI old steam versions. I saw that someone made a mod for FFV on Steam to make the sprites look like the PSP versions of I, II and IV.
I think some mods might have fixed the awful UI for both versions
For FF5, use https://steamcommunity.com/groups/ff-modding/discussions/9/451850849177129998/
For FF6 https://www.moddb.com/mods/final-fantasy-vi-a-world-reborn
Sadly, the UI in 6 can only be tweaked in minor ways, like changing the font and character portraits.
FF3 I haven't played PR, only 3DS and it was fine, but most forgettable
FF4 PSP or SNES
FF5 and 6 SNES or GBA
I don't like pixel remaster. Bestiary is not in-game, but in menu, you can't permanently turn off minimap, graphics could have been better, especially comparing it to the PSP versions.
Graphics: I prefer the NES, it is darker, grittier and felt "scary" going through dungeons.
Difficulty: NES is the toughest to me, with no extra ethers and hi-potions available, only 4 slots of each weapons and equipment instead of a full inventory really makes you choose carefully what to keep and what not to.
QoL: PSP version - I like the bestiary and treasure tracker (showing what is missing and what was newly acquired). Big miss with the Pixel having the bestiary outside of the game.
I have mixed feelings about the pixel remake, but at least it is a legal easy way to play it without old consoles or emulators.
*Edit-forgot to mention that the NES version was full of bugs, with many weapons and spells not doing what they were intended to. With that being said both the PSP and Pixel beat out NES in that respect.
I barely started so I cant give a good review of the gameplay yet but the graphics are much more modern than the original. I'm sad. RIP FF1 Original... but eh, you cant please everyone.
If they would just release the PSP version for consoles and PC i would play that instead.
We're not supposed to talk about such things, but blurriness can be addressed by tweaking the emu rendering settings. Older versions of PPSSPP were indeed pretty ugly before vulkan settings were updated.
I know a lot of people are upset about the bonus content from DoS and the 20th anniversary edition on PSP being absent, and I don't...really get it. The 4 extra dungeons in DoS were...fine. The last couple were way too long, but I didn't think they added anything really substantial to the FFI experience beyond some fan service for the later 5 games and some majorly overpowered gear. (Some of the dungeon gimmicks were kinda interesting, too, but most of the time I thought they were more annoying than anything else)
As for the 20th anniversary content, do people...actually like the Labyrinth of Time or whatever that thing was called? I played it for the first time a couple years ago and I was astonished by how awful it was. I only had to do 7 floors, but it took me well over 2 hours because of how asinine the mechanics were. While I wouldn't be opposed to seeing the DoS content return, I sincerely hope the 20th anniversary dungeon gets lost to time. (No pun intended) I also really don't like the RPG Maker look of that version, or the monster sprites being so faithful to Amano's art, as I personally can't stand his work, but those are pretty minor nitpicks that I wouldn't say impact my opinion of the game nearly as much as that horrible extra dungeon.
