Please Fix Controller Input Issues
I have tried this game with various controllers (Xbox Series X controller, Retrobit official Sega bluetooth controller, 8bitdo SN30 Pro+, Dualsense, Dualshock 4, you name it) nothing works out of the box like it does with every other steam game I have installed.

I am now trying some suggestions I've read on here such as disabling controller profiles in steam controller settings (seems bizarre to me but I'll try it and post back).

It cannot be a bluetooth problem, Every one of these controllers works fine on all the other steam games I install, even the other Final Fantasy games. Also no issues with RetroArch or Xbox game pass on Windows, nor Battlenet.

I rarely every post on these discussion boards, but this game is definitely misappropriating controller inputs and it really needs a patch to fix this. If you can't install a game and have it just work with a controller, let alone a Microsoft controller on a Microsoft OS, that's not a good start.

Not hating on the game, ONLY the controller issue, and ONLY with this one particular title. It can't just be me (Simpsons Skinner flashback lol).

Edit: So after a bunch of testing, bluetooth isn't the issue. The problem is the game itself plain and simple. What I did once in-game was press shift+tab to open the steam overlay. I then went into controller configuration and I remapped my Xbox Series X controller inputs to match the game's keyboard controls. While it isn't ideal, after doing so (and saving a configuration profile for what I will call bluetooth controller broken games) the game responds 1:1 with all my controller commands. Perfectly smooth, all while still connected with a perfectly functioning bluetooth.

For the record I also tried disabling all of the automatic controller profiles in the steam settings prior to launching the game and that didn't help either.

I also tried reverting back to regular controller input once I was loaded into a Final Fantasy 1 save game, thinking maybe the bad controls were only not working on the main menu. Unfortunately it's just as bad in game as it was on the menu.

TL:DR, using the steam overlay once the game is running, reconfigure your bluetooth controller inputs to match what the game uses for it's keyboard controls (remapping ABXY on your Xbox controller to Enter, Q, X, etc, whatever the game uses) and it'll work just fine.

Obviously this kind of workaround is only viable for basic games like this. Hopefully we will get a patch to correct this as I cannot imagine why bluetooth controls aren't functioning correctly. Maybe has to do with some kind of input polling queue the game uses which is set up to be very intermittent.

Shared my controller rremap if anyone else using bluetooth controllers has problems. The remap was done while using my Series X controller, but should work on any of the Xbox controllers.

You are definitely not the only one who has had controller issues, but you guys are in the minority for sure. I have been using a wired XBONE controller since release with zero issues. but honestly, if it was giving me that much of a headache, I probably would've switched to mouse and keyboard since this game doesn't need a controller. Good on you for sticking with it and hopefully finding a solution.

For sure, and based on what I've been reading, it seems to be an issue (if you're affected by it) with bluetooth (maybe also 2.4Ghz connections) that's the culprit as I haven't noticed any problems with a direct wired connection.

At least with the way I remapped the controls, it works perfectly, albeit strange seeing in game prompts for the keyboard layout 24/7. I like the game enough I can ignore that, but hoping that this information can ultimately lead to a patch. It has to be something simple that was missed.

I have a Series X controller and a Steam Controller and PS4 controller and it works fine for me there lol. Do you use SpecialK? Gave me many issues with this game.

Sorry I don't know what that is. Is it some kind of controller software? I quite literally have a vanilla setup, or as vanilla as it can be. When it comes to controllers I just use bluetooth which seems to be the culprit. Using a cable for a wired connection the issues disappear.

And I know it's not my bluetooth adapter because when I remapped the controls on my Series X controller (ex: pressing A = Enter key on keyboard) it works great. There's something buggy within the game itself, affecting bluetooth.

If you are using your controllers with bluetooth connections, then there must be another piece to this puzzle. Either way, I've gotten a round-a-bout fix that works for me so I can enjoy the game without wires and I appreciate the replies!

I have an Xbone controller and have had no issues with my controller. I am using a controller USB adapter for wireless and not the PC bluetooth, though.

I'm using my PCs bluetooth controller with a PS5 controller and the only issue I've had was I needed to connect my controller after the game starts, or it won't respond. Which through me for a loop because FFXIII was the opposite. Since then though I've had zero troubles.

I'm having the same problem. The page for Final Fantasy on Steam says that controllers are not supported, so that might be our problem right there.

Where does it state that controllers are not supported? The Steam Store Page indicates it has partial controller support. If it does indeed mention no support for controllers then that's definitely misleading.

The fact that you are experiencing issues, and your post is from March 27 2022, around 7-8 months from my original topic post, ouch. I haven't really launched the game since as I was anticipating some kind of patch to fix these minor annoyances.
Guess I'm still stuck using silly workarounds such as keyboard commands that are mapped to my xbox controller as a way to get around this.

Where I didn't decide to initiate a refund after experiencing this, I guess I'm not helping the problem much. Money is what gets companies to take notice after all.

Using Xbox controller wired, also unusably bad. I'll try remapping as original poster suggested (thanks!) but it's weird.
