Unstable Essence - finite, why unstable, how many in the world? [Discussion]

So after you acquire an unstable essence from a very hard boss, and you die before getting it to a checkpoint, that does mean it is lost forever?

Are there finite amount in the world? Do you get them only from bosses/mini-bosses once and if yes does that mean they are finite amount and once lost they are gone forever? Meaning you can not progress your character further or/and are severely gimped for the rest of the game.

And if there are finite amount why do you even have them unstable in the first place?

Am not even sure how many I lost before even knowing about this mechanic, and even then I lost even more because I just got killed by a random one-shot mob on the way back to a checkpoint (the freaking war of the words mechanical octopus that lift you in the air and let you fall to your death for example).

what are talking about?
never lost any perk essence on my way to the last checkpoint

Tutorial says it drops "in its original position".
Meaning it either lies where you dropped it first OR it lies where you killed the boss.
If you can't find it, maybe it fell through the level and got transferred into your inventory and you absorbed it without noticing.

As for how many you lost, remember how many bosses with big lifebars and names on top of the screen you defeated and compare to the amount of perk points you have/spent.
Chances are you haven't lost anything yet.

Thanks, I managed to find it at the original boss location. And answered me two of my questions I was wondering about. Posting here in case someone searches for similar issue.

I think I just permantly lost the essance from Wormlord. I killed him with 1 pixel of health, he died but the explosions after his death killed me and the essance tutorial popped up. I don't have an essence in my inventory, and I see it no where in this huge boss arena.

Whelp that sucks ;(

EDIT: Nevermind, you just need to go through the portal and its on the other side ;)

Strange choice of function... Could be held by the enemy/be close to the trap that killed you, but it just dropping on the ground... Hmmm...
