Ended up doing this, it works but super lame. This fight could have been much more interesting.
By the time I got there I had Vermillion bow, but winged would work too.
Remember you have 3 sets of arrows you can cycle through with mouse wheel, so it's not just metal arrows.
Other enemies only get hit once by the multi-attack of various catalysts, but the worm gets harmed by every ball from what I've seen, so he takes like 8x the damage or however many projectiles one blast spawns.
Pretty sure the scaling on that weapon is broken, bcs it oneshots pretty much everything other than some bosses
Honestly - the fight is very badly done and needs a complete rework to be intuitive and fun. It needs to be viable for all builds to fight it, both ranged and melee ones.
Give the boss several stages. Make it immune to arrows except for the difficult to hit vulnerable places, like the head, so that the ranged builds would have challenge and reward. Make it stop from time to time (to do a charge attack for example). This will give the melee builds the opportunity to come closer, wack it a few times and cancel the high damage charge attack.
Add several ruins with ladders to the arena to increase verticality. Have the wormlord turtle up it's vulnerable places and go up to fly between them on 2\3, 1\3 and almost dead damage levels. This way players would see the need to climb and jump on it's back.
Make the fight actually fun.
