Do not do this
The reason basic steaminput config do not work is because it is natively setup to WASD config for some reason but all you need to do to fix this is go to the game steaminput config > preset > select; gamepad
If you disable steaminput you might run into more issues than anything, for exemple my dualsense controller is unusable like this because I need to activate RAW input for it to do anything without steaminput but activating RAW input will also make the stick move uncontrollably
Using steaminput with the correct profile will fix it easily
Quick note to the devs here: just set your game base steaminput profile to gamepad mode to make 90% of the issues people have with the controller support disappear
Another issue is the lack of analog controls, it just feel wrong to be locked to 8 directions with a stick and the inability to walk is a major hit to the platforming too
Other than that the controls are mostly ok but having a different preset closer to vanilla dark souls control could also help a lot of people so I would consider doing this if only to limit the number of negative reviews
Disagree. Without turning off Steam Input this game was unplayable. With Steam input on even .1 on sensitivity was unplayable.
Steam input off, game plays fairly well.
I use Xbox pad though.
I agree with you on the direction controls sucking. It makes moving feel so off in this game. I have gotten more used to the combat mechanics but not being able to walk SUCKS and the character movement SUCKS so it makes the game feel SUPER jank when it shouldn't.
I can't find this, I right click the game on the library> properties> Controller to disable steaminput, but there isn't a preset selection menu, there is only the enable/disable/auto override, a status list and a link to Controller general settings (can't find it there either), if it's not in this window where is it?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found it, had to go into Big Picture Mode
EDIT 2: Works much better now, I can finally use weapon active abilities, thanks a lot
Are you sure your steaminput profile was on "gamepad" and not on keyboard mode ?
Where exactly was that setting I never found it and just turned Steam Input off, only way to make it playable for me.
I don't know where this gamepad thing is, I never mess with steam input in games I Just install a game and go and have never had to change anything. Works in Elden Ring, Dark Sous, any other game.
Where is this gamepad preset?
To clarify, changing the sensitivity does work, but even at .1 the sensitivity is super high so it's unplayable.
Okay, I finally found that setaminput profile hiding away in Big Picture.
a) Never opened big picture in my life before just now
b) Never changed or messed with any controller settings in any other game before, they just always worked out of the box
So - either I have been doing it wrong, or this game oddly has controller setup that made it necessary to do this.
Although for me now .1 is too slow. I have to use .3 or .4
All this did though is behave the same way as completely turning off steaminput.
When you're on the game page in your library you should see a few different options under the green play button like store page community etc.
One of them should say controller config if you have a controller plugged in but if for some reason it's not here you can try to get it from big picture
clicking it will open a new window where you can configure your inputs, just go to preset from here and choose the one called "gamepad" this is the basic preset used by 99.9 % games on steam and what you've probably used for all other game you play with controller.
I have no idea why this wasn't the default for this game my only guess is the game devs really have 0 experience playing with controllers
Doing this will also fix your issues with the camera sensitivity
Ah, okay so yeah other games selected it by default, this one didn't. That's what threw me because I never changed these settings. Also turning steaminput off for me has the same effect since by default the game works with my Xbox pad.
Working fin enow..well as fine as it can with this semi broken mess lol =D Camera feels fine anyway.
Just wish the movement wasn't so jank.
This is because steaminput is basically a layer used to take controller inputs and turn them into customizable xinput
You're using a xbox controller so it already uses xinput, this is why it works for you when you disable steaminput but for any other controller it will create more issues than anything else because it loses this translation layer
This is why for people using DS4/Dualsense controller or Steamdeck telling them to simply disable steaminput is a terrible idea when you can just fix it by doing what absolutely every other game on steam does; setting steaminput default layout correctly
Also having the correct steaminput profile will fix most issues in this post
"Raw Input for Controller" won't be a necessity anymore because steaminput will take care of it
"Bluetooth" won't be a problem anymore because steaminput will act as a layer like it should
Gotcha, thanks for explanations :) Working fine now. Just trying to figure out how to use special wep moves now.
