I've finished 2 stages so far. I've cheated through the 2nd after too many failures, I find the game really hard. It has these moments where there's just too much going on. Veteran players will find it a breeze probably. This means they will finish the game very quickly. And that means they won't be seeing a lot of levels. Because every stage has tons of levels of which randomly are chosen.
By design it seems you're supposed to die plenty of times to get to experience enough of the game.
Problem with Metal Unit is it lacks difficulty settings. It only provides cheats for those struggling, which make it less fun (infinite potions for example, it is too much). I'd rather have reduced damage, more health or something like that.
You've actually paid attention to the story, I haven't so won't judge on it much, I don't really mind a lack of story, less is more. Plot holes are a minus of course. Maybe the writer was trying to bite on more than he could chew.
I would like to share my humble opinion about this point.
The difficulty settings are hidden in the game.
The whole game is actually balanced around not having upgrades, not having access to the armory, and not having the set effects.
If you keep dying, you will naturally get more CCs for upgrades (such as more health, free health recovery).
Hopefully you will be trying a lot of random items and combination to unlock more items in the armory, but maybe by that time you will find items that feel just right to you.
The damage reduction offered by getting the Warrior set helps a lot too)
Even potions are farmable.
It's just that we want people to at least try before getting those things.
If when you have access to legendary items at will with no cost (or even epic items) and you have a lot of upgrades, the end of the game still eludes you, I think you need something more than just some more HP or damage reduction (which is when assist mode kicks in).
And if you think getting the MP or the CC required is too grindy and requires too much time, once again, assist mode got your back and you can ignore those requirements, while still having to complete the game by yourself.
And trust me, I'm not saying that to judge people's skill level, the game is designed to be accessible to everyone without holding your hand too much, and there is absolutely no shame in using the assist mode, we don't even block any achievement if you use it.
It's fair that we could absolutely add some more options like you mentioned, but I think there's something to be said about having too many options and overwhelming people that want some quick help.
Agree, besides that's exactly what NG+ modes are for aren't they?
But having said that rather harsh piece of criticism, I gotta say I still enjoyed it very much. I appreciate what was attempted here. Game kinda reminded me of EYE: Divine Cybermancy in that regard, and I much rather have a game that aims high and stumbles a bit on the way than one that doesn't even try.
