Stuck in chapter 2

Two things are giving me trouble in chapter 2.
!. The man by the bridge says he's looking for the head of the river, cuz a special rare plant grows there, and it only reveals itself under the right conditions, but doesn't give any hints as to what those conditions are and I can't find any clues on the map or by talking to other people.
2. The shepherd wants to introduce me to his father, a renowned plant gatherer. He tells me to go through the curtain at the back of the tent, but interacting with it only pops up a message, "Oh a curtain. Wonder what's on the other side." and won't let me through. I'm assuming that I will be able to go in after figuring out the 'head of the river' quest, but there are no clues about how to find that location.
Help please?
