The game launched in Early Access with Digital Extremes as a publisher on 17th of August 2023. DE had built up hype for the game but the servers were not up to snuff so the majority of both sales and negative reviews happened during the few weeks following that date.
On 10th of November 2023 Digital Extremes closed their publishing branch. That was mainly due to change in studio leadership and with it a change of direction. Wayfinder's development funding was cut at that point and Airship Syndicate, the studio behind Wayfinder continued development on their own funds. They were initially searching for a new publisher for the project but they could not find one that fit their criteria. This might have been due to the negative reputation of the botched launch and the late stage of the game's development but might also have been due to the other party requiring more severe monetization. In any case the search continued a few months.
On 8th of April 2024 AS announced that they would be publishing the game themselves and stopped the sales of the founder packs with the intention to relaunch the game as a single player game. All revenue from sales prior to that date went to Digital Extremes and not to Airship Syndicate.
On 15th of May 2024 AS officially announced the transition to a single player game.
On 30th of May 2024 the old founders got to play the new version of the game and a couple of weeks later on 11th of June the game got released back for sale. The revenue after this point would go to Airship Syndicate.
Notwithstanding, that tale implies that the game has been treated like an unwanted, 'mutt pregnancy... Which makes it a minor miracle that it made it into a fully-fledge product... and, in odd way, gives me hope that they may support it with more content. After all, it would have made some money by now, and is still there to make more if they can maintain interest in it -- something only support and content can achieve.
They messed up not making this a hub based game like capcon pulls for every hunter game.
Had they just used that model I think this game and it's world would of been hotter. Especially since games like Dauntless started to drop away due to changes in their gameplay.
It's a bummer. It's not even a bad game. They just chose the most boring way to keep the mp. Then again it doesn't seem like choice.
I'm more curious to know if the current dev team actually gets the cash for sales now or if it's towards a now ghost ship company.,
