It's near impossible to kill him because of all his healing and he will get you through the content just fine until you unlock a wayfinder you want to main...
The early game is fairly forgiving and you unlock other characters relatively quickly so there's no real "best" option out of the gate (though I prefer Wingrave). It should also be said that the fundamental game didn't change overly much from the original release, so character guides remain pretty accurate in their descriptions. A lot of the changes all happened on the backend and in late-game stuff and it doesn't play much differently from the first go-round.
I do mean learn the mechanics of the game like fight mechanics. Once you start to get the block and dodge down you then go into the other characters where you need to do those mechanics.
Most characters have some form of self-sustain but Wingrave's is the most consistent due to how frequently it triggers even without ability usage. Just by doing basic combos you'll be landing finishers that trigger his heal.

This is Kyros. You can find him in a chest in the Void dungeon.
No where did I say they didn't. I simply stated he was the best starter character. I also didn't say he was the best character. It's just in terms of a character that has some of the best healing in the game. This allows for a safety net when learning the game. So in terms of forgiveness and messing up Wingrave just gives you that freedom to mess up more.
