How does loot work?
I'm actually quite surprised to see a game like this taking such a big U-turn and turn into an single player experience. At this price, it also seems like a steal.

However, I'm wondering about loot.
How does it work in this game? Is it randomized from drops, crafted, purchased?
What kind of loot is there (weapons, armors, ...)?
If there is armor, does it visually alter your character's appearance?
Are there different loot tiers (normal, rare, unique, ....)?

Cheers!

1. You can craft loot, you can get random drops, and you can purchase gear.
2. See review
3. Yes all armor alters your appearance
4. Accessories & Armor: common, uncommon, rare
4b. Weapons: common, uncommon, rare, legendary (there MIGHT be a fifth rarity between rare and legendary, but I am not sure)

cheers! Reading your reviews made me buy it. I'm just a sucker for ARPGs and this game seems to have it all. The unique visual style is also quite appealing.

Yeah I am actually super impressed with this game, I even got my wife playing it with me and she rarely plays ARPGS looters.

Would be a long shot, but I reckon the multiplayer probably isn't split screen or local coop, right?
My wife would only play games with me if they're local (things like Cat Quest [which is great fun], It Takes Two, ...)

So there's a bit of every system in here.

Armor is one time drops and doubles as cosmetic unlocks.
So if you kill some enemies and you get a chest piece drop, you only get that drop once, it unlocks the chest piece to equip as armor for a slight stat increase and unlocks the chest piece as an option for the cosmetic transmog/layered armor system.
Each character's armor is independent and you can get drops for another character while playing one.

Weapons, have a rarity though I've yet to fin anything that isn't uncommon, drop with a level, which as you level up weapons will drop at higher levels. You can get duplicates, and you'll need to swap out/upgrade your weapon as you progress. Some aspects of weapons can be randomized like the types of echo slots the weapons has for example.

Accessories are very similar to weapons, with rarities, levels, and randomized slots, but there's a lot more and they have set bonuses for equipping specific sets of accessories,

Echoes, which act as your gems or decorations akin to other arpgs, drop from specific enemies, have a level, and a rarity, specific echoes provide specific stat boosts but the level and rarity affects the capacity and effectiveness of those stats.

There's also a talent web for mostly passive stat increases, and affinities with is also mostly passive stat increases.

Also there's some consumables and room decorations that can provide stats but I'm not versed in those yet.
I'm sure I missed something or didn't explain something the best but that's about as much as I understand so far.

It should be noted that armor has rarities too...
So once you unlock the armor, it may start out green, but you can unlock higher rarity versions of it as well.

Higher rarity armor gives you better stat bonuses
Good to know, I hadn't noticed that yet.

Thanks for the extra info. I don't need much more convincing at this point, it's already in my library, ha!

There is a lot to unpack here. Loot drops randomly from a loot pool for the area/boss.

Weapons have preset stats but random echo slots and drop at a level you are fighting at. They are marked as different rarities but their rarity depends on the level you get them at. Each weapon has a move set determined by its type and an ability determined by the weapon.

Armor does alter your appearance and gives you % increase to certain stats. Each armor piece has a rarity and a set increase to a certain stat and you can only find it once. You can transmog as well to get the stat increases from one piece with the appearance of another.

Accessories have preset stats and rarity and come at the level you are fighting at. They also have random echo slots. They come in sets of 3 that increase 1(green rarity), 2(blue rarity) or 3(purple rarity) stats by a percentage if you equip more than one of them(5% for 2, 10% for 3 equipped).

Characters also have echo slots.

So what the hell are echo slots? Basically when you kill an enemy it can drop an Echo of itself that you can equip in your echo slots. These echoes increase certain stats depending on the enemy and come in 3 rarities and at the level of the enemy you killed. Higher rarities and levels means more stats. Each echo has a type which must match with the equipment slot that you are trying to put it in. There are also "Rush" type echoes that drop from bosses and give you certain passive or rather semi-active abilities. Some examples would be "Triggered by: Using a weapon ability. Effect: Creates a bomb over the head of the closest enemy that will explode causing magical and break damage equal to 300% of ability power. 40 second cooldown." or "Triggered by: Losing 40% of your guard break meter. Effect: Grants damage shield equal to 30% of max HP & 60% reduction to incoming break damage. 2 Minute cooldown."

Hope that helps.
