How is the death penalty?
The game seems promising, but I couldn't find any info on death penalty in the reimagined, non-MMO version. Is it the usual mindless corpse rushing with an 5-10% decrease of whatever as a "penalty", or does the game have actual checkpoints and resetting dungeons/bosses when you die, akin to the upcoming Path of Exile 2?

Why would you want a death penalty on a Single-player/Co-op game? This is nowhere close to Path of Exile series.

To have a challenge? Gear, builds and tactics are meaningless to me if I cannot ever lose a fight anyway, because I can just keep respawning and chipping away at a boss' health. (This stupid corpse rushing mechanic is the main reason why I barely play any ARPGs or survival games, and was singlehandedly responsible for my finding Diablo 2 inferior to Diablo 1 as a kid.)
Open world bosses where you can respawn have timers so you cannot take your time forever and with instanced bosses you have to start over from the start of the fight.

I see. But assuming that I can still clear out dungeons even if I lose all of my loot (only taking more respawns), that means the game is not for me. :(

Anyway, thanks for your answers, both of you! At least that part is clear. I guess we'll take a look at Windblown instead.

Thank you so much for the clarification, it does sound like the game handles challenge the right way. It's back on my wishlist now!

There is no challenge to be found here, except for challenge you impose on yourself. All the difficulty settings of the game, including "story mode" give the exact same rewards, loot, xp, currency, everything. Of course, you can play on harder modes without any incentive, but you could make up any rules you wanted to make any game challenging for no incentive. "Play with 1 hand" or "if I get hit by something I delete my character". If you are looking for an incentivized challenge though, you won't find it here.

Pretty much the case with all games that have difficulty selection at the start of the game instead of as a way to prolong the experience via new game+ modes.

Thank you, but that isn't a big issue for me. As long as the game provides various difficulties that cannot be cheesed by respawning and corpse rushing over and over, I'm fine with it.

There is a hardcore difficulty (perma death?) coming from the devs soon. That's a pretty good penalty for dying.
