How to unlock more characters?

It's a bummer since I only wanted to play this game once, but hey... the question is, how do I unlock more characters? There are no hints in the UI or they are pretty vague.

How long will it take me to unlock Venomess, for example?

You unlock all the characters by just following the main story. You get the 2 other starters within the first 1/2 hour of play. The rest follow very shortly after. There are hints, go to Omen and it will tell you how to summon them.

Some (one) are really hard to get, I did not get all of them until 30+ hours in, mostly because there is this large wurm thing that scales with you and summons infinite normal wurm things and AEs a sizable portion of the play space. Also it was not uncommon to have a literal 1/2 dozen or more of them spawned at the same time while fighting said boss.

I would, just come back after a few levels, lose, repeat. Maybe I suck, or my toon (the black dude, ranged trap user) is not great, or the fight is just unnaturally hard, I don't know. I think that was for venomess.

You can get all characters within a couple of hours if you know what you are doing, even Ven. If you have a problem with the content scaling you can turn it off at any point and you can easily outlevel content. You can also switch the difficulty to whatever you want at any point.
