Could someone explain the controversy here?
As someone who has NO idea what wayfinder is, I read an article that the developers have bought back the rights to the game are updating it to be a single player RPG, instead of a MMO-Lite...

Isn't this a good thing? Why are people upset?

I would appreciate an explanation of what exactly is upsetting about this, because I was considering purchasing it once released as a single player game.

Preservation is a good thing, but airships handling has been a bit, lets say interesting. There were three tiers of founder packs, up to 170$. Those founder exclusives that people bought for wont have the same value given its turning into a single player one time purchase of 25$. Let alone the fact that founders bought into an mmo, not a single player optional co-op. Given its singleplayer nature, any founder exclusive stuff would be moddable. Buying a single player game, worth 25$ for 170$ isnt very great value either. Plus as of late, a dev member is comparing this to singleplayer games that have bundles of various prices, however those were intended to be sold as singleplayer games from the beginning.

You had a notorious publisher, and a up and coming developer. Both seeked greed in making the next warframe, but without having to deal with the freemium aspect of warframe.
Early access battle pass, mtx shop (cause hur dur testing), and everything else to milk the paid users. Game was meant to be a F2P mmo, but the entire time it was paywalled.
They couldn't handle the player count during closed beta, and decided to release anyway.
DE login servers couldn't handle the surge of participants - claimed they didn't expect so many people (total lies we already had +8k in closed beta as is). Server issues aside, and +40 minute queues with asmon losing his mind. Server server stability was ass too.

The game issues themselves run by herin the developer provided garbage level hotfixes to gunshot wounds with band aids... most crucial issues that cause in-game stability were never addressed. Their "content" patch that they managed to finally release with "over a thousand bug fixes" (Mind you they went silent for a time to suddenly burst with awesome news.. hate this tactic the most.) Patch came, was very lack luster, brought back some players, and player numbers continued to decline. Once helldivers 2 came out console players dropped this game like the plague and went off to better experiences. Steam playerbase continued to dwindle as developer kept saying they're dealing with the transitional change with the publisher while looking for another (which I'm guessing no one gave them favorable terms so they decided to self-publish). Then at some point they said to the community this is prior to a lot of things happening at the time. They had all the funding they needed to finish the mmo, but not long after for whatever reason they laid off about 10% of their staff.. Supposedly they had around 100 so 10, maybe 15 unless a few quit themselves. and at some point they boasted they didn't need new customers because they had all the money they needed to finish EA. There's just so many things they've done that you shouldn't do as a developer, the incompetence, bad choices, all fell on the developer. DE was incompetent on it's own no doubt, but they didn't share that incompetence to this degree.

Thank you for the explanations of everything that is happening. I completely feel for the people that bought into the MMO and are not getting whatever the release ends up being.

For me personally, I will keep an eye on it to see if it DOESN'T suck once fully released as a single player rpg...

With all the drama that's happened since launch I can't say I have much respect for AS. No idea why they decided to partner with DE of all publishers. I guess they saw $$$ and jumped at the chance.

However trying to de-mmo a live service game into a single player, unless they've been trying to do this since the very begining I don't see that they have enough time to justify such a major change. They're still a long way from 1.0, and for whatever reason they're justifying a price increase after lol? They can't even deliver one promise yet.

We payed money for a full mmo game for a full mmo experience. Many of us never would have bought Wayfinder, if it was a single player game from the start.
Many of us trusted the AS people and bought 150 § exalted packs and in game currency to support them to deliver the game they advertised and promised us.

Good thing it's not a single player game and has online coop.

Ok it's singleplayer with p2p co-op, but it's definitely not a mmo anymore.

OPTIONAL co-op
A co-op that doesn't even have matchmaking to begin with because AS thought who needs matchmaking for a single player game right?

Nah, they are just really rubbing it in the faces of MMO players. Evidently MMO players cant make friends and need 1) a massive player base to cycle between randoms to play with or 2) matchmaking because nobody will actively want to play with them.

Get rid of that toxic MMO mentality and maybe y'all can make and keep friends.
