Ranged weapons will let you kill higher leveled enemies early game.

As for two handers, I think the fire sword is best atm.

the earth will shake if you use the Q ability of the lava sword.

But be careful:

you need nerves of steel to collect the materials.

unless you buy the sword in the store with real money.

Typhoon = underrated starting slow 2H axe, big-D Q slam
Colossus = Cleave is ok and fun to use, better for AP Wingrave. Overall, meh.
Titan's Bane = The Better 2H Sword
Epitaph = Same slow attack speed as 2H axe/breakers but good damage and AP boost

Tooth and Claw (sword/shield) = Easier to get and great single target dps if used with max pip. Its Q can match Titan's Bane.

The objective best weapons in the game are the shotgun type. Notably Tempest. This is because there is some kind of bug in the way its damage is calculated that is making it do dramatically more damage than it reasonably should. Every reasonable person expects this to be fixed sooner rather than later. Game development times do not run on normal human standards though so sooner can be measured in weeks/months depending on how spaghetti the code is.

Lucky for you I am 2h user myself and willing to type up a short guide to help you make a decision.

The advantages of 2 handers are two fold.

First is all its attacks have a high break coefficient. So you will put enemies into a stagger state and do 50% more damage reliably with 2 handers. Sword and Shield can do shield attacks with high break but they suffer in damage. 2 handers don't have to make that trade.

Second advantage of 2 handers is they have a block. Block can cancel any of your basic attacks at any time. Blocking frequently is less stamina cost than dodging and lets you hold your position. Also I frequently am able to cancel an attack with block and side step, evading it with no stamina cost.

2h technically have 3 types. Axe, Sword and Scythe. They have different movesets with a good bit of overlap. Axe's standard combos have weird pauses in their animation between attacks that feels clunky. It turns a lot of people off initially. Both Sword and Scythe combos animate much more smoothly and feel a lot better. I'll give axe this one big benefit though. The alternating loop for axe does 2 hits on its heavy which I am sure is a net positive for its dps.

By alternating loop I mean if you do a combo and instead of doing the final hit you switch to the other type of attack (light/heavy). Then alternate between them. This is a fast and infinite combo that you can re-aim between hits no problem to chase enemies. Also if you do a sprint/dodge attack you can immediately go into the alternating loop.

Typhoon - Axe type. Starter weapons have 20% less total stats than crafted. Only use if you desperately love the axe for some reason or its the only one you have. Its special is actually very good, competing for potentially the best because it does a defense debuff.

Colossus - Sword type. Best for if you want to do break. Its special is decent but the others are better I think. Highest built in defense if you care about that.

Titan's Bane - Sword type. Great special. Better stat allocation for offense than Colossus but worse at break.

Epitaph - Scythe type, highest overall offense of the 2 handers. Best if you intend to use specials a lot as its special gives an ability damage boost after it hits.

One thing to add about Titan's bane 2 hander, if you dodge roll, your lava weapon ability that is on the ground will disappear.
