Is this PVP only? Asking for my Crew of PVE gamers who are interested.
But not if its PVP only, I learned from Rust that Nothing sucks the fun out of a survival game more than trying to build and learn the game only to have over equipped sweats destroy my stuff and waste my time. I'll gladly throw down some money but I need to know this first and foremost.

I believe it is PVP focused.

It is PVP focused, but they are adding aspects of PVE in the near future. You will most definitely run into other players who are chill and will vibe like myself or others who will shoot on site.

Can you play alone? Do you have to play online? Is there singleplayer?

Online only PvP there aren't any aliens, zombies or creatures so if you played alone all you would do is build a base and end of game.

According to the developers they will be introducing private server functionality, likely with at least some control as to what happens on the server in terms of rules. So far the dangers are other players and environmental, no NPC's or life forms yet. I was lucky enough to be on a server and location that had no active players, so I am enjoying exploring the base building and technology.

Please note, when building your base, there is a cost associated to maintain a base of Tier 1 or higher. The cost does get greater and so far I have not found a way to reduce those costs. It is likely a mechanism to prevent people from building massive unassailable bases. With a private server the reasoning kind of disappears. I have found bugs in the way modules go together, or don't go together like they should. Overall though it is good.
