Do NPCs build their own houses?
I played very little of the game because I have a question: Do new NPCs build their own house or do I have to build it?

Honestly, I'm not interested in building houses for each NPC, I think it's a bit unrealistic, in real life, each person builds their own house, no one builds it for you, I believe the game should offer two options: you build their house or they build it.

I say this because I don't like spending hours building things and I imagine that several NPCs will be a huge amount of work.

In real life, each person builds their own house? Maybe in an Amish community, not so much in most places...

But no they do not build their own houses. You have to do it for them.

If you just build them something small and minimal it won't take long. Probably a few minutes per house including getting the materials. But if you don't want to do it at all you'll probably want to avoid villagers.

Note that villagers aren't really required in the game. They're there to help with stuff like farming, fishing, etc. and a lot of people like doing the town management stuff but if you aren't interested you can just raid other towns for materials, use their wizards for enchantment, and stick to dungeon crawling.

I have a question that is related to this actually, I've just built a house for the farmer and accepted him, but he settled in my house! How do I allocate his house to him?

press C, then click on settlers tab. From here, select your settler from the list and click on the bed you'd prefer them to use.

If you truly want to be 100% hands off of building, then i'd suggest avoiding recruiting villagers. They NEED your participation in building a settlement. As ElDudorino suggested, the requirement for them isnt much. Making a small room just big enough to throw a bed and lightsource into is pretty much it.

There is a happiness system, and if you decide to cram all of them into a cardboard box, dont expect them to be thrilled. This really only affects the ones that you can trade with though afaik, as it affects the pricing of services and goods.

Hopefully the building system grows on ya my friend, as this game has provided nearly 200 hours of fun for me so far. Happy gaming!

OK thanks, i thought there might be a way of keeping them out of my own house, but if not then fair enough, I guess we can all share living space.

oh you can do that too. on the settlers tab, theres a "lock bed" button. click that button, then click the bed you want to keep for yourself.
as for the house... you can create custom restriction zones, that will keep villagers in certain areas... i usually use this on the elder to keep him in his house. I hated hunting him down after every quest so doing the restrict zone makes him stay in his own house.

creating a large blanket zone that excludes your house and assigning all your settlers to the zone will keep them out of your house.

I kind of agree with you to a extent... maybe we could place a blueprint for their houses or buildings we want to use, and then they build it. that way we could plan things faster. instead of getting there and do it by hand every single time.

I find it interesting that this thread exists at the same time theres another one about peaceful mode. We each have our own wants and desires i suppose. Something unique to each of us that draws us to any one particular game. I would say that the only real solution would be to offer all options, so we all have something to choose from.

Personally, one of the biggest things i enjoy from this game, is the ability to develop a custom town over time. To be honest, the idea of an "instant" house completely removes one of the primary things i love doing. Really focusing on the over time aspect of it, making the slow develop almost slow on purpose. I love to see the growth, and let my creativity in building come out. See the progress, and make each house custom tailored to the npc im building it for. Making sure fishermen have a lake/ocean side home, hunter out in the woods, surrounded heavily by trees, etc...

not to say i dont enjoy the adventuring, looting, slaying and questing, though. I try to embrace all that there is to enjoy. I know thats not everybody's cup of tea though, and totally understand that some people just want to hop into a game and kill some baddies lol. I know some days, all i'll do is incursions..... non stop for like 3 hours. just whatever i feel like doing at the time.

I'd say if anything is offered solution wise for instant housing, i'd really hope it would be optional. Definitely would hate to lose something so fun as building.

as a tip for building homes for your settlers, i recommend giving them a 9x9 living space.
it makes it much nicer to keep them at maximum happiness in the long run as you grow your village to a lager size. in the beginning i built the homes for my settlers much smaller and in hindsight i made it harder for myself in the beginning.

now i even use a 11x11 grid setup for building my settlement, you got the room and you can also easily extend your island also. just as you lay out your homes for the npcs and eventually maybe grow your settlement to a larger size, make sure that the work areas are not too far away from the settlers that you want taking up tasks in the work areas.
