What is smart mining?

I have used it both off and on, and mined things, and for the life of me can't see any difference...

It's like an auto lock feature on what you're mining pretty much. Whe nturned on ores gets a hitmarker

So if I mine Iron while it's on, it should auto-mine iron if I stand near iron-ore?

Because that isn't working...

It just mines everything in the direction of your cursor instead of just the tile you are hovering over :)

You still have to do the mining. But instead of hovering over every tile. you mine in a direction.
