How do I find pirates?

I used about 20 village maps and none of them say pirate village. Does that work to find a pirate village? Or do I just have to wander endlessly, sailing on the slow-ass boat across 20 boring copy-paste maps until I find it?

I think you have to explore the world by boat, but it shouldn't be too hard to find one. From your current world just try each direction and see what you find. I found a Pirate island 2 Islands East of my home Island on the second trip.

You can craft a pirate village map in the demonic workstation. They work similar to the village maps :)

I bought pirate maps from the traveling salesman, pretty cheap if I recall. Maybe 108 gold? He buys map fragments for something like 70 gold, so it works out.
