FYI - One Player's Animal Setup
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3341987075
This setup works pretty well for my animals. I do everything possible to max the happiness of my settlers, which includes making 12-18 gourmet foods for them, so I need a lot of cooking ingredients, especially raw meat!

I have 8 regular pens:
2 chicken pens of 209 blocks
2 pig pens of 209 blocks.
2 cow pens of 209 blocks.
2 sheep pens of 209 blocks.

Since I struggle to get enough beef and pork, I have additional pens for cows and pigs:
1 cow pen of 429 blocks
1 pig pen of 667 blocks
Based on animal crowding info on the wiki, I keep 8-9 animals in every 8 blocks of space.

My pens are set to 20% males and 80% females. The animal keepers do a pretty good job milking, shearing, installing frames in the hives, and maintaining herd sizes, but that does not generate quite enough raw meat, so I need to cull the herds myself about once a day (play day not game day). I use my infinite rope to drag all but 2 of each gender (and never the babies) out to be executed. It's only pixels!

My 8 animal keepers, 6 anglers, and 4 hunters do a great job keeping my 2 raw meat boxes filled 75% with meats and eggs, plus 1 full box of common fish, and 1 full box of honey from 16 hives with frames, My 8 farmers (and their support staff) keep the nearby crop boxes full of fruits and vegetables, My 2 chefs, restricted to full-time cooking and only the areas they need, are able to keep the Taco Bell box filled with food for my settlers (and me, too).

This is my 3rd or 4th time through the game. I enjoy playing all aspects of the game and I only have a few achievement left to complete, but I especially enjoy maximizing the layout and automation of my settlements. My current game has one settlement where every block of my island and surrounding water is fully utilized by my settlers.

They have names like Doolittle Ocho, Vidal Sassoon, Paul Bunyan, Ahab and Ishmael, Robin Hood, Guards Alpha and Foxtrot, Jeremy Clarkson, Tomb Raider, and so on. They work in restricted zones with names like Taco Bell, Diddly Squat Farm, Compost Emporium, Wild Forest, Botanical Gardens, and so forth. It's all goofy, childish fun to help me remember who does what and who works where. Most importantly, all 61 of my settlers are at 100% happiness all the time. My ultimate goal for my settlement!

Hope this was helpful or at least amusing. My profile name explains it all.

Looking good! Yes, even a one block space between pens allows each pen to be a separate animal husbandry zone with separate settings. I learned this the hard way, too! :D

Settlements with restricted zones can work really well, but balancing storage priorities can take some tweaking. Good luck!

The Animal Keepers are excellent at milking, shearing, and changing apiary frames, but not so great at meat/leather production. I have tried a lot of animal count settings but now I just leave it blank. When my pens are super full of milked and sheared animals (thanks, AK's!), I do my own animal exterminations to get a lot of meat/leather at one time. The 2 males and 2 females (and bunch of babies) that I allow to live will reproduce quickly, the AK's will do fantastic animal husbandry, my pens will fill up again, and I will put on my executioner's hood again ... the circle of life!

Haven't needed to do that yet. :haha:

Still no pigs. 19 settlers now. Tons of wood, and farming, but looks like i will need to plant more wheat to keep up with the animals. I need to actually set zones for harvesting too instead of letting them go out and pick apples and blueberries halfway across the island
GameAddict 10. okt. 2024 kl. 15:29
I bet you will really like having restricted zones with dedicated storage for your farmers. They will be far more productive. Some of mine do max fertilizing plus less farming, and the rest do the reverse. To keep them focused on their work, they are all set to do zero hauling because NOBODY can out haul your guards! :)

Here's more info nobody asked for ...

My settlement is made up of 9 block wide x 11 block high "sectors" with single vertical roads and triple horizontal roads. I like lots of speedy stone path roads for fast travel. Only a few areas are comprised of multiple sectors in my settlement (like Feng Shui Warehouse and Taco Bell Kitchen).

My 9x11 crop sectors mostly contain 2 crops each, except wheat and sugar beets, which get their own full sectors. But even one full sector does not produce enough wheat for my troughs and windmills. So I also have an extra rotating crop area with multiple sectors where the crops change based on what I need at any given time. Right now, it's wheat for my troughs.

Thanks for reading!

Well organized. :B1:

Trying to find a Swamp Cave at the moment. Been to about 4 locations, and the map doesn't say there is anything there. Oh wait...I need a ladder down.

this should be a guide as apposed to a discussion post, this all is really helpful in terms of setting up the perfect farms for each animal.

EDIT: I just got to the last part and saw Ahab and Ishmael :0 Moby Deeck reader or Limbus Company player? or you happen to get them by chance?

Thanks, Tito and Leo!

I am a GameAddict but I read a lot, watch too many movies/TV shows, and like graphic novels, too. I have a lot of setters so I rename them to help me remember their jobs. My other anglers are Hemingway, The Deep, Bassmaster, and Captain Nemo. My guards are Alpha, Beta, Charlie, Delta, Echo ... Don't worry, I won't name all 65 of my settlers! :P
TITOMOSQUITO187 11. okt. 2024 kl. 23:20
Naming them makes them more interesting. Their given names are too generic. Makes it so you ahve more of a connection to them as well, and them dying matters. :smug:

is there any point having settler's happiness above 100 beside being OCD?
GameAddict 17. okt. 2024 kl. 10:27
Titomosquito187 - LOL that is fabulous! Thanks for sharing!

Yodarkore - For me there is a point beyond OCD. Since Fair took the time to code Necesse so we can see the actual happiness over 100, I like to know it. Keeping happiness maxed has helped me maintain 100 when there were unexpected problems with settlers.

I have a question. How do you utilize your different item sets? You have like one for boss fights, mining, settler villager, etc. with the trinkets and clothing?

btw...HAppy Halloween

Titomosquito187 - The maple trees are really colorful and pretty. I always get a laugh when I get chased by those pumpkin heads! Your settlement looks cool! Your settler homes look very cute with their different layouts and varied wood furniture items. Mine are all the same and kinda boring! :P

Thanks. :D:

A lot of that furniture is just stuff I looted from dungeons, or Pirate Camps liek all the gold furniture. IT's just something I add to my looting in there. Especially now that I have the Waystone. MAkes sure I always have an extra few beds available to toss up a room real quick, and use all the furniture from dungeons, and caves. :B1:

I am not happy with the layout of my settlements in games like this when I start them for a first run not knowing what to do, and end up kind of a mish mash of stuff unorganized. I suppose here it doesnt' matter too much considering the "building" aspect here is more limited than a side scroller like Terraria
