Metals gone. Unintentional trashcan use?
So I just started playing not too long ago. Finally got a bunch of copper and iron ore melted and into bars. Took them from the forge and was just going to build an anvil and sort my stuff and start making some nicer weapons. Then the bars are all gone. I find a brick wall in the trashcan slot. I did not place it there intentionally.
My question, what actions would put items there? I did not drag and drop it. I can't replicate that but I suspect that's what happened. Bums me out, honestly. If it is possible to disable it or even have it disabled by default? That was 100% NOT intended.

Sounds like you have accidentally quick-trashed them :(
When you hold down shift and click an item, you will quick-transfer them to either your hotbar or the chest you have open.
When you hold down ctrl and click an item, you will quick-trash it. Your cursor also turns into a trashcan when you do this to indicate it.

To clarify. I did not move out of the starting house. I did not die.
A few times I've unintentionally dropped weapons, no idea how that happened. But that's the only other possibility. Would some other entity pick that up and run away with it? Or was it indeed trashed?

Is there a way to disable such trashing completly? This is the problem with having just two mouse buttons for everything. Sorry, this is just TERRIBLE design.

I just tried it. It's in my spine to hold ctrl/shift expecting to move everything from inventory to teh chest. That's going to happen every single time I'm afraid, that's a trained reflex. Wasn't even aware I did it.

You can drop items and weapons by dragging it and right-clicking outside the inventory, or by simply closing the inventory while dragging it.

As you would expect, the hotkey can be disabled in the control settings. It's under "Key modifiers" and "Quick trash". I'm afraid you are in the vast minority in thinking it's terrible design. People usually love the amount of hotkeys and QoL available :/

You may also have set up settlers to have access to your chests, which will make them sort them by what you have filtered/configured. Is that what happened?
If that is the case then they are not deleted, but instead just moved to the place that you have configured it to be moved to.
But since you say that you "found" a brick wall in the trashcan, and the only way it can end up there is by you trashing it, that's what I assumed happened to your metals.

I do not have settlers. Played for maybe two hours yet. Can't afford settlers, probably due to trashing coins all the time. Prior to this, I've put coins in a chest, as they hireable ones always seem to show up when I've died and need to recover things.
Quick commands are useful. Though relying on a cursor change to indicate such things is over my level of attention span. Moving stuff around all all that, all for it. Maybe having more than one queue/history slot in the trashcan? I will need to disable that one. As I said, that will undoubtedly happen again.
Me struggling to see the interface is probably not helping either. My eyesight isn't great these days and it's very small.

Disabled the quick trashing, unbound it completely. Wheat seeds went missing after this. But maybe they can be used in some recipe. Otherwise I have no clue how this keeps happening. I still do not get how I mange to drop weapons now and then.

I did the same thing and lost a bunch of iron.

" I'm afraid you are in the vast minority in thinking it's terrible design."

Brand new player and this happened to me. So many games use ctrl-click to move stuff around in inventory. Consider me part of the vast minority. Took me a while to even figure out stuff was vanishing, then had to google it.
Fair  [developer] Aug 5, 2024 @ 3:54pm
Just to be clear, when I said the vast minority it means that most people like that there are hotkeys for stuff like this. And as I mentioned in the above post, the hotkey can be changed in the control settings.

Many games use ctrl-click, and many use shift-click as well. Necesse uses shift-click to quickly move stuff around. If I were to change it to the other way around, people in the other camp would come saying it should be the other way around. You can swap them around in the controls if you like, or completely remove the quick trash hotkey :)

Also as I mentioned, the cursor turns to a bright red trashcan when you hold down the hotkey over an item to indicate it. Even though it may catch you off guard the first time, and I am very sorry for that, I don't see it as a solution to remove the hotkey altogether.

The issue is not the key bindings per se, but that you don't know whats happening until the inventory is lost. I have since changing the bindings. Thanks.

Interesting people having so much trouble with a QoL feature that is above all customizable, lol. I love the way it is now, and once u get used to it, it just makes sense. I also LOVE the quick stack key and use it all the time. I DO however have a problem when building and drawing stuff from inventory and when I switch the items, say from walls to floors, I drop the remaining stack of walls on the floor. Happened so much, and I still dk what I'm doing wrong x)
I did the same thing and I also doubt the minority of people think this is a dumb design. Just went mining for hours and after smelting my copper and iron I just trashed all my smelted iron. This has totally discouraged me from playing anymore ngl.

I have a Problem related to that. I have unbound the ctrl key from quicktrash to prevent stuff like that after i trashed something accidentally. Now i can not use ctrl to increase the production limit of something by +-100. It would be nice if we could still have the increase by 100 feature without ctrl bound to quicktrash.

I've been playing for 2 days now, and I have also trashed some items this way on accident.
Nice to know it's ctrl+click that is delete, I must have miss clicked.
Maybe have the trash can icon bigger when holding down ctrl ?
