When you hold down shift and click an item, you will quick-transfer them to either your hotbar or the chest you have open.
When you hold down ctrl and click an item, you will quick-trash it. Your cursor also turns into a trashcan when you do this to indicate it.
A few times I've unintentionally dropped weapons, no idea how that happened. But that's the only other possibility. Would some other entity pick that up and run away with it? Or was it indeed trashed?
As you would expect, the hotkey can be disabled in the control settings. It's under "Key modifiers" and "Quick trash". I'm afraid you are in the vast minority in thinking it's terrible design. People usually love the amount of hotkeys and QoL available :/
You may also have set up settlers to have access to your chests, which will make them sort them by what you have filtered/configured. Is that what happened?
If that is the case then they are not deleted, but instead just moved to the place that you have configured it to be moved to.
But since you say that you "found" a brick wall in the trashcan, and the only way it can end up there is by you trashing it, that's what I assumed happened to your metals.
Quick commands are useful. Though relying on a cursor change to indicate such things is over my level of attention span. Moving stuff around all all that, all for it. Maybe having more than one queue/history slot in the trashcan? I will need to disable that one. As I said, that will undoubtedly happen again.
Me struggling to see the interface is probably not helping either. My eyesight isn't great these days and it's very small.
Brand new player and this happened to me. So many games use ctrl-click to move stuff around in inventory. Consider me part of the vast minority. Took me a while to even figure out stuff was vanishing, then had to google it.
Many games use ctrl-click, and many use shift-click as well. Necesse uses shift-click to quickly move stuff around. If I were to change it to the other way around, people in the other camp would come saying it should be the other way around. You can swap them around in the controls if you like, or completely remove the quick trash hotkey :)
Also as I mentioned, the cursor turns to a bright red trashcan when you hold down the hotkey over an item to indicate it. Even though it may catch you off guard the first time, and I am very sorry for that, I don't see it as a solution to remove the hotkey altogether.
Nice to know it's ctrl+click that is delete, I must have miss clicked.
Maybe have the trash can icon bigger when holding down ctrl ?
