Is there a trick to beating the pirate captain?

All you gotta do is build a big room, with around a 20x20 interior, and then remove one of the walls. Then all you need to do is alert the captain, run back into the box, and replace the wall, after which none of the pirates or parrots nearby will be able to enter the box and attack you, meaning you can focus solely on the captain the whole fight. Makes the fight drastically more manageable

I typically use shotgun+homing bullet,talk to gunsmith if you haven't bought one. material for the bullet can be farmed by repeating void wizard(craft summon item).

I might be butchered by the community, but, setting your difficulty to very easy or baby mode (forgot what's it called, just hit the button all the way to the left) and the battle becomes easier. Please don't remove this feature!

Another thing to note is the timing of his canon blasts if you choose to engage him at range. The timing is quite reliable, meaning you can time your dash just before the canonball reaches you to escape the blast. You'll still need to deal with the pirates swarming the area, but proper timing nearly neuters the captain himself. Beware his charges however, as he will frequently attempt to crush you especially as he loses health.

Make sure you are at the right point in the game, I fought him before I was supposed to and it was pretty difficult compared to other bosses.

you might want some good enchantments and healing/food if your on normal or higher, theres also a sheld that protects you and reflects some damage, i got a nice bow from the swamp cave boss which i enchanted and used poison arrows with nice dmg, also use the potion bag and dont forget to spam q for health potions.
