Love the added mechanics of heat exhaustion etc. A nice addition to a game I have thoroughly enjoyed so far...!

Also, if I didn't miss anyone, there are 5 characters in total, and you can have all of them in your caravansery at the same time!
Considering their locations:
You start out with Demetrius sick in your caravensery. Heal him to unlock him. If you build efficient and craft an own medicine you can even get him ready for the 1st night (every inventory slot counts!)
The ambassador lady can also be found easily as she is connected to the first main quest of getting medicine from the caravan. I always made sure to lift the wagon. No idea if she might be missable if you decide to just pull her out.
Then there is the guerilla, you find him in the old battefield in a cave. You see something glinting and have a choice to either use a shovel or use your hand to reach for it. Since I lacked a shovel I used the hand and got him to join me. No idea what happens if you bring a shovel.
And the last character I found can be found in the Imperial Outpost. Just bring a shovel to clear the rubble. Its an imperial scout, and he is the best character for scavenging since he has the biggest inventory size.
If you still have problems with the scenarios, here are some more things that proofed helpful for me:
If you lack water (especialy if you decided to poison the oasis), mind that you can also drink milk for some thirst quenching in a pinch.
Also if you lack power in the siege defences, you can always get a quick boost by bringing up to 3 tar pots from the tar pit. You will find plenty of pots in the destroyed village.
Instead of forging the equipment yourself, you can find a lot of equipment on the old battlefield just waiting to be picked up and be repaired ... makes the first few battles a lot more relaxed.
Speaking about first battles: Remember that you don't only need bricks for your own buildings but can also use them to fortify the bastion. This especialy helps in the very first battle.
I can confirm the bug then.
I too did not shoot the messenger, but there was still an attack on the same day where the event with the messenger happened.
I figured the current attack will just be resolved and the NEXT attack will delay, but I never really paid attention if it did.
I had to deconstruct my early drier to make some shovels to access the old imperial fort.
Also found some wood in the bottom of the map (old battlefield).
Water was always a big issue, even with an upgraded rainwater collector so don't hesitate to drink milk.
I found a lot of fibers so the drier was not needed in the end beside drying 5 meat (found 3 carcasses early in the caravan).
one is in the caravanserei at the pier. Two you can find on the old battlefield, just near a secret cave. There are more pieces, I think, but those are the easiest to be remembered. ;)
the bug has not been fixed, please check it - i let the envoy go, agreed to armistice, but the same day battle happened and the next one happend in 3 days as usual
