It's a frustrating design choice, and, as you said, is too grindy. By level 20 you'll be able to win races with your eyes closed, literally.
At least they added the jumping. You get a good chunk of experience for each jumping competition, so I turn my focus pretty early on to trying to get better times in that, which at least gives me something to do besides gallop in a circle for 60 seconds (holding down the A or D key to stay as far inside as possible) before spending 10 seconds banging on the spacebar.
Tl; dr: I feel your pain. Sorry.
It all makes me question why i bought the desktop edition at first place... Sorry that you relate..
