Use "A" and "D" to move left and right.
Use "S" to slow down--useful if your horse's preferred position requires you to slow down to be beside another horse in the front, in the middle of the pack, or at the back, depending on preference.
Use "Q" to look over your shoulder--use this to find the zones for your horse's preferred position.
First things first, you aren't going to have any "sprint" built up until you've had your horse in the correct position for a bit. If you're really struggling, try buying or breeding a horse with "front" position preference. If you time the press of the space bar necessary for breaking from the gate, your horse will be in front and get at least some time in the right zone off the bat. You'll know you're in the right spot when the "Sprint Charging" banner is at the top of the screen, and you'll notice that the sprint bar along the top of the screen fills up much more quickly.
If possible, save your sprint until the last 200 meters of the race (the finishing line will begin flashing in blue at 200 meters). Ideally, unless you're way out front, you'll always want your sprint bar to be completely full for those last 200 meters.
Then press space while looking only at the sprint bar along the top of the screen. Ignore your horse and moving left and right--finding "an opening" to pass other horses isn't part of the game; they'll all just move out of the way for you.
So watch the sprint bar along the top and time hitting the space bar to when the next segment on your sprint bar "flahes" as fredreed2000 said. Once you get the hang of it, you won't need to look at all--it's the same rhythm for every horse. I'd say the correct interval is something along the lines of one press of the space bar per second, but don't take my word on that. Just practice several races watching only the sprint bar at the top of the screen during the last 200 meters and you'll have it.
It isn't very intuitive, so don't feel bad. It took me a couple of races to sort it out as well. You'll be in the winner's circle in no time.
As we say in Hawaii Mahalo (thanks).

No problem, I'm glad I was able to help!
