How do you unlock weapon customizations?

Throughout the game you find yellow brief cases hidden that unlock the attachment.

Just so I understand, every single weapon customization needs to be found on a map before it can be used at the customization terminal in central command?

Do I have that right?

Yes, there might be a few that you just have off the bat but most are found in the missions before you can use them.

Yep, that's right. Even if you had a weapon with a specific attachment in your hand before you can only actually equip it at the customization box if you found the right case.
