Okay, I can see that. I really didn´t want to mess it up, go play this game if you like it.
It was just very surprising for me, because mostly, "overwhelmingly positive" on steam is given for exceptionally good titles. I just couldn´t see that here.
It´s really a sad time nowadays for gamers. Hopefully there will be a time again like in the early 2000s when one outstanding game after another is being released.
I´ve played through the System Shock Remake before, but that´s a competely different game (immersive sim, not really an FPS).
No, Sir. Go play through classic Quake (with a graphics mod) or Blood 1997 (Nightdive Studios released a remaster) and you´ll see that FEAR doesn´t even come close here.
This right here shows me you are not truly a boomer shooter fan and are just a low life troll.
Iron sights got popularised in 2003 and introduced a bit before in Delta Force, long after the boomer shooter era had ended.
Trepang2 wanted to be a spiritual successor of F.E.A.R. but also wanted to be a fast paced over the top DOOM like at the same time, this mix just doesn't work here in the end.
The gunplay is good albeit a bit flawed but everything else is mediocre tbh. Trepang2 is not entirely a bad game or what I would call a complete trashfire but in my opinion it doesn't deserve overwhelmingly positive reviews. Blame the stupid steam review system I guess and the hivemind sheep mentality too.
I do not agree with you when you say Trepang2 gunplay is not satisfying.
It is fast paced and most of the guns feel satisfying (except the shogun).
Unfortunately the major problem is that it does get boring and reach such high level of repetitiveness to the point I don't even want to continue playing it. In Trepang2 each encounters feels and play exactly the same.
With F.E.A.R. at least you had to think a bit about how you would engage into a gunfight, the maps were designed in a such a way that the enemies would retreat, reposition and try to outmaneuver you, it felt engaging and interesting.
In Trepang2 you just rush like a maniac fighting dozens of generic enemies with bad AI in poorly designed maps with a limited and unoriginal arsenal, it inevitably leads to mind-numbing combat.
I also don't agree when you say the level design or gunplay is not great in F.E.A.R..
Better not forget the game is almost twenty years old by now and they had to deal with the limited tech they had back then. Personally I think the level design and combat is still way better or at least more interesting in F.E.A.R. than it is in Trepang2. By the way go try the shotgun in the first F.E.A.R. game and have the audacity to tell me the shotgun is better in Trepang2.
Finally I did not like any of the story, characters or cutscenes.
To me they all felt unmemorable, underdeveloped and at no moment I felt engaged with the story or connected to the universe of Trepang2.
But that's a fps so we can forgive that and as the mastermind John Carmack once said:
“Story in a game is like story in a porn movie; it's expected to be there, but it's not that important.”
reviews are overwhelmingly positive because it turns out most people did not care at all about what you disliked. maybe they got distinct standards, maybe they were brainwashed. ik as much as you there.
apples to oranges, really
people like fear 1 and 2 for the game play
