"Others" modifier based on environment
Wouldn't it make more sense if the "others" modifier was based on which other species are actually in some proximity (for example comparable to the decorations) to the inhabitant? It makes apartheid more valuable as a policy, instead of only in terms of their housing.

Indeed it is difficult to manage this completely, which is also kind of the point. But if it's managed well, a garthimi colony in some mountain should not drastically affect the happiness of the other inhabitants of the city imo.

Might be computationally intensive? Either way some way to take itno account the actual interactions between the citizens would be appreciated.

While this makes some sense to me, so does the current implementation.

Gameplay-wise, I prefer how it works now. The species boosts to industries are very powerful. Getting a full or almost full set of these should come with significant drawbacks.

Then there is the issue of replayability. If you could easily get every species onto one map, it would be a bit diminished.
