Tips for someone with experience v63
I've been playing this game for probably two years. Love it. Amazing. But i find it gets harder and harder with each update. I used to be able to build 1200+ pop cities, and now I can't seem to get past 500 without riots or strikes every 5 minutes, and a population that seems to bounce up and down. Any tips? Not really sure what I'm doing wrong. In the new update I keep starting with the easiest settings and I still can't seem to have a smooth (relatively easy) gaming experience. I appreciate the challenge but I tend to prefer city building more than struggle haha

I would also like to know. Out of curiosity, what race and what climate are you settling in? Do you take that in mind when settling. I think Cretonians in a fertile temperate climate will be quite easy?

Give them time off, free booze, and free money whenever things are going poorly or you think you might mess up in the next day or two (run out of food). Was it Nero or Caligula who used to throw gold coins from the top of the cenotaph? It'll keep you in power, trust me.

Interesting issue. I don't experience this. I had a great start with Cretorians using an irrigation system and buying almost all refined goods instead of having industry.

I also succeeded in getting 1.4K population first time playing only Garthimians. It went suprisingly quickly, focusing on husbandry, fishing, buying as many human slaves as I could for intelligence work, also buying all refined goods instead of industry. Sold raw wood, "that green ore" and livestock. Have now nearly 10% slaves. I picked my starting position very carefully. Next step now is to build an army and go conquer which I have never done before. Very exciting!

I always start with either cretonians or humans, and I always choose a climate my starter race loves 100%. And i've tried multiple games with sticking to one race or allowing all races to enter and I seem to run into this problem no matter what I do.
On a side note, thank you for your work. You've created a game that scratched a niche itch I've had for 10 years that had yet to be scratched.

I have reached the same sort of situation.

I was having loads of fun and then I hit 978 population. 876 Crets, 100 Donds.

Neither of the two can stay happy for long, and this came all of a sudden. As before the two races were happy and loyal.
It kind of ruins some of the fun to have to constantly give them days off while trying to figure out how to recover the save.

I have to admit my experience with this this v63 update is one of astonishment, its a real game changer this update, and I love the changes to what is initially unlocked and SO much better with the information panels from your citizens truly fantastic. Awesome job DEV :spiffo:

I've had mixed impressions with this update indeed. Some find it as easy as ever, while some struggle. I saved one saved where the player had full food rations and couldn't get past 400 pop because of starvation. So I think it's a matter of communicating what's going on in a better way.

It's impossible for me to say what went wrong. Could possibly be wrongful deaths? Or an update? You must check the happiness panel and see what stat has dipped, one of them must have.

I have been using the happiness panel to try and fix the issue but it seems pretty hard / confusing.

#1. Both races want physicians. I had to unlock the tech and I quickly built two of them.
They are both staffed yet have no need of patients at the moment. So I have them but it still shows up as being needed. (granted, the need is decreasing).
#2. They want clothes. I have two large cotton farms, a giant weavers, and several tailors. We can't grow enough cotton to get enough clothes for all the citizens which seem to desire new clothes every few months.
Before I was selling Fish every month to then buy clothes to help this, but, I now need the fish to support out food stocks due to having to give days off every 5 minutes which has led to less farm-work and dwindling food stocks.

#3. Arenas. Arenas. Arenas. Arenas. Arenas. I built 3 basic arenas. Not enough for them.

I am trying to build the GIANT big arena and have spent quite a long time slowly chipping away at the resources for it. I am 500 cut stone and 450 weapons away from building it.

However our colony (despite having guards everywhere) has no crime. Why do they want these arenas when we have no prisoners to use in them? It doesn't really make sense.

In terms of access, I can't really provide them with anything. Crab people are given 3 clothes each (because 2 wasn't enough for them to be happy) and 1 wood. Dond people just have 1 clothes for each of them.

Services are all somewhat met (minus arenas despite having several already built) and I do not have a tavern or bath.

The only way to keep their loyality / happiness up despite all of that is to just spam days off, which in turn leads to less food, which makes it harder to import the other things I need like clothes.

The only part of this experience that I find to be upsetting is the arena one. Everything else is fair enough and falls on me for not building the colony proper. But if you don't have people committing crimes and thus don't ever use arenas, why is the need so high?

I can think 2 ways to somewhat fixing the problem.
The first one, is expand your food production. I think, that Cretonians love fruits and veggies, so, create a couple more of farms (40*40) and give access to 2 rations for day (only cretonians). That gonna fix the happines problem, and also Cretonians have a +40% more bonus for farming so with only 30 cretonians, gonna be enough to have 2/3 farms in full operation. (if the problem is that you lack of workers, just take them from some useless factory, Cretonians, btw, aren't very usefull there, having also malus in some factories)

The second one, is Indoctrinate until 100% all the cretonians. It's an expensive technology (3000 Tech points) and it's also, time consuming, but after that, they gonna have a very high loyalty, and also +25 more production for farms + mining operations. They still, gonna be unhappy, btw, but at least, they don't gonna burn all your city.

Based on the screenshot, you are missing even fundamental "day 0" services.
*Eateries
*Wells
*Lavatories
*News spots

All of these should be at 90+%. You are losing out on more fuflillment than arena for a fraction of the cost. News spots can also give up to 15% indoctrication, so are double useful.

Note that the fulfilment from arenas from cretonians is lower than it appears, as you need slaves, and cretonians dislike enslavement. So no need to go down that route at low pop.

Law is also a bit low. Even without courthouse, it should be higher.

It may also be since you are running a mostly mono-race city, a lot of your pops do jobs they don't like. Job fulfilment is big, as is retirement age. Unless you have a lot of old people, you can raise it a bit for mostly free happiness.
