Army and Combat is Incomprehsible to Me
Right now I have a population of over 200 and am currently being raided by 10 bandits.
Because no matter how much I mess with the options I can't see any way to recruit or conscript my citizens, so I decided to hire 100 mercenaries.

I have 100 mercenaries, 200 citizens, yet 10 bandits manage to walk up with no resistance to my throne and end my six hour game. I'll be honest here, this has kind of pissed me off here.

What am I supposed to be doing? I have spent the past ten minutes paused flicking through various menus and don't see any way to stop it despite how ridiculous it is for 10 men to take over a city of 200 with mercs at their back.

first build barracks, there you get troops to be trained.
second, click on the small sword symbol top left. this shows the troops (divisions) you want to have. they get filled with soldiers if you have them traned in the barracks. you cna click edit to change stuff, like division size and the quality of equipment you have, but early, you may just not have any of that at all.
BUT important is to have the races selected properly to those divisions, because they only add to the division of the correct race.

you cna chekc in the menu of the sword if there are even any ppl assigned to that disvision by the usually red bar turning green (or partially being green)

in case of an attack you need to gather the troops first. click on the battle symbol, top right banner liek shield and sword. then again top left, click muster (the arrow with the bar) only if you muster your troops will they form a combat ready unit and go out of their civillian activities.

then you can select and do stuff with them

optionally,

if you have the mercenaries hired they should be on the world map as an army, you can send them to the thief army on the map and you should be able to initiate a battle to kill them (either manually other by autocaclulate)

as soon as you get message that bandits are coming they will appear on the map, hire mercs and intercept, then you can disband them.

the bandits dont appear on the map anymore in v66. it is literally impossible to hire mercs to fight them. you either give them what they want or they just appear in your city, doesn't matter if you have an army standing on your city on the world map.

i literally cannot think of a reason why the dev, in the name of realism for a city state simulator, would make it impossible for a city state to hire mercenaries to defend against raiders.

just train troops, minimum training. Im at 1k pop already with no raids, 250 soldiers. I bought the game yesterday.

Is that what happened, the dev made it impossible in the name of realism?

Mercenaries were OP, you just need some army to prevent getting raided. I think you can still fight raiders with mercenaries tho

I think it's more along the line of bandits and such, so they don't show up on the world map for that reason. It makes sense logically, as a city could easily be attacked by small groups that wouldn't be noticeable until they were attacking. The dev also seemed to indicate that raiders would not scale so crazy anymore, either. So that fits the 'less organized group here to raid stuff'.

The problem was more late game before, raids got progressively harder to the point of always eventually being attacked by hundreds of fully kitted 100% trained troops.

The plan, unless it has changed has always been that raids would be an early game problem and more of a nuisance later on, the plan in the next update slot is to do more work on the world map/empire stuff, including the AI empires actually attacking you properly, those would be huge sieges.

The difference between an organised foreign invader storming your city vs a few smelly banditos from the forest raiding the pantry.

Yep, something to make sure you never want to send all your armies off into the far corners of your empire.

Nah it's most likely because SSeth abused mercenaries in his video so it HAS to get nerfed because a couple people abusing something in a singleplayer game warrants ruining it for everyone. Devs that try to hyper balance the fun out of singleplayer games are just lame. Jake in particular can be as stubborn as a mule regarding his nonsensical changes.

and then? those ppl are weak, if they have to go against ppl that are havign armor and weapons. They may fend off bandits and thats it. you still need wepaons armor and a lot of food to give them rations to work as an army as well. the chain is huge, unless you just iport that stuff and focus other industries on export goods. also, at the moment the raiders announce they gonna come, it is for him to late (without having an older save) to set up a training ground and train them to an adequate level.
