Possible change: Quick emancipation Bonus to happiness?
So 'former slaves' is a malus to happiness/loyalty, but if I buy a slave and immediately free him he should be happy. Yes, I understand logically speaking I just supported the person who enslaved him (or at least bought him last), but these people are too dumb to know that 'striking' at the primary food production facility of a city is a move that only hurts them and does not hurt me.

Citizens dont like stinky slaves becoming their equal. Current slaves are happy to see theres hope, but first class citizens hate the idea, wich is VERY historical accurate..

gotta love how they hate having slaves of their own race and also hate freeing slaves of their own race. it makes zero sense

Yeah. Thats an oversight, probably.

Although maybe is a mechanic so players dont just buy and free slaves and get a spiral of happyness and immigration?

probably for balance, yeah. i dont really know why he bothered putting the emancipate mechanic in the game though, there is literally never a reason to use it in any circumstance

There's a title for it.
This is a rather dry answer. Of course, the FORMER SLAVE factor plays a role, but most slaves live without meeting basic citizen requirements.

The moment they become citizens, their quality of life is much lower compared to existing citizens, which results in lower happiness. However, this issue is mostly resolved after about one season of living as a citizen. Freed slaves actively move around and fulfill their previously unmet needs.

The impact of the FORMER SLAVE factor depends on the race. For example, Amevien do not care whether someone was previously a criminal or a slave because their population is small. This allows players to buy Amevien slaves, free them, and rapidly increase the population.

(Personally, I think buying slaves between cities reduces the fun of the game. Instantly increasing the population with money feels boring. When a slave trader visits randomly, there is uncertainty, making the decision more meaningful. But buying slaves from a neighboring city is just dull.)
I like being able to spot fix when (yet another) accident makes five workers die a horrid death.
