do you need gates/fortifications?

I've been starting to get the hang of the game but so far all battles seem to take place outside your city, is there ever a reason to build fortifications of any sort on the city map?

Your city can get attacked by raiders or another faction. It can help to have some walls and gates to build choke points for defending your settlement. You could also not use them and always send out an army to attack the attackers on open field ^^

Sorry to necro this but how exactly do fortifications work? I don't even know how to put my troops in them. I understand how walls work but the fortification building has me at a loss.

like, the palisades and stuff in that menu? you have to build them at least 3 tiles wide, then you'll be able to put archers on them using the battle menu to assign troop positions. i dont think infantry does anything when on walls since theres no siege towers or ladders

FYI if you complete surround your city with fortification and some gates, your city looks will change in World Map.
