I usually put 4 doors in those self made buildings just to be sure.
And YES the doors are a lighter color ( almost impossible to see ) if the dev is looking i would prefer a color like yellow or green for the doors so we can see them clearly ^^;
for uniformity yeah ... its a bit of a hit and miss for me but I usually built my buildings at roughly the same size as a dormitory so I place my "home" and use road as a ruler for them ^^. or if I need a larger building I do it in sets like this training hall requires more room so I will make it in 2 sets of dormitories or 3 sets to make sure I have enough room.
when I place a dormitory I place them in 3s so 3 domitorys beside each other in one go.
use E to increase your size to 3 ( Q reduces the size ) R rotate the building plan :)
The door to the dormitories looks like a ">>>" pointing downwards from your home that needs to pointing towards your road :). Note it is the same for a bench too and it is hard to see.
so I have a road and I place my domitory on that with the doors pointing towards the road.
Select the Dormitory and it will show its size . press "E" 2 times for size 3 and just place it :)
Homes do not need anything else :) the people living their will furnish it on their own with time and what you give them access to in Citizens -> All or Race -> Access.
You do not need to do that in the beginning but with time happiness is harder to maintain so give them access to wood and stone will make the people happier and their homes will get different looks.
it is made of sizes roughly with Dormitory in mind with 1 square for harmony items because my primary races are Orcs and Elves ( sorry I can for the life of me not remember the ingame names. )

Most of my buildings are on 16x6 and then I adjust the Items inside for the optimum I can get will still fitting into the space.
For the warehouse that means I have enough room for 40 crates of fruits if that is what i need.
*EDIT* for some buildings were the amount of room is not needed I snip off the corners to get more ... appeal ? for the Elves and Orks ^^
i don't see any of that
perhaps because i am using the demo?
I caught a couple of youtubers playing and recommending it.
I loved what i say and just went for it ^^ I am 40 hours or so in in my first colony and just restarted to play my second colony.
