Right click your main race in the toolbar on the right, then go to 'Access' (I think).
There, you can set how much furniture / wood / stone etc they are allowed to take to furnish their homes.
Do I need to get furniture in the storage that are close enough to the homes? Or they would be available for homes in any storage in the capital map?
I have several small storages scattered around my town with various consumables such as clothing, tools, furniture and so on.
I can make it, store it, sell it, buy it but cannot allow it.
right click the species list on your right to open the population window, then to the left there are categories such as population, access, services, etc.

There is "furniture" and "furniture". We must learn the difference. Furniture from carpenters is a resource that is used for builidng stuff. Imo this resources should be called "CARPENTRY" to hold the terminology straight and avoid confusion.
And then there is "furniture" for housing, that is made up of 14 (?) different resources that the various races use as furniture.
