I agree that they need more stronger sides (or less hate, but that'll make them generic) to be more worthy. Although somewhat better morale will probably make them strong enough already. They're indeed way too eager to run for a "zerg wave" army type.
Not only does training massively increase morale, it also increases the hit and block chance among other things. Their spammability and their excellent fishing/crawler herding food production makes them useful as easy to satisfy (they like darkness, noise, etc.) food producers or miners in the most hostile climates, as all they need is mountains or access to water for fishing.
It's easy enough to breed->indoctrinate them, train all of them, then use the 100% trained Garth populace to hold a massive population of slaves, without which they can't do much on the world map. Their inherent armor and pierce value will always give them a pretty big edge over any other species (sans Dondo/Cret/Argo) -if- they're at the same or a higher equip level. This is especially apparent at later stages of the game where you run into max-equipped enemy armies.
Their greatest strength as your primary species is the ability to mass-produce elite units to send out to the world map, where they will not eat increased rations or occupy your services at home but will still count towards your population for reaching new titles, and (to a certain degree) slave submission. Their strong food production makes it easier to satisfy the Argonosh requirements, too.
I do agree that they should have better morale and maybe a little more weight to absorb blunt damage though. Better mountain digging speed, and probably better training speed as their low lifespan makes every year count.
Humans certainly don't have a slow birth rate, are not particular good at war (or aggressive at getting into brawls). I was thinking more along the lines of a violent type of companion race that mirror their opposites for production, foods, birth rate, maybe housing. With the addition of them being reasonable at combat, possibly archery.
