Has anyone else run k to the issue with being locked out of area because you ran out of keystones you can get

Yes me. I opened Virgin Breaks (Monarch and Dragon Queen = 2 KS), Climax Peak (0KS), and Pleasure Pastures (Dryad = 1KS). I can't get the Dryad's keystone because it requires access to the bees, which I don't have.

I think I don't even have access to that "mega slime", at least I wouldn't know where it could hide.

I think it's a major flaw the game allows you to get stuck like that with - apparently - no way to recover. There isn't even much hint at the "intended" order, at best you could judge by the proximity to Homestead.

The slime keystone is available from the start. It's in the town. You will be forced to make her cry since you didn't do the "correct" order, though. The mountain is needed for a later keystone, so it's not a waste.
I'm pretty sure the only way to softlock now is to unlock both the desert and the demons before unlocking the elves (and of the two, you probably want to pick the desert, to unlock portals).

I don't understand why the game doesn't tell you a specific order is required, allows you to deviate from it, and doesn't provide a proper way to recover if you do.

I played it through and here is what I think is the correct order:
1. Get the keystone from cetaure and open virgin breaks. (1 key)
2. Get the keystones from butterfly and dragon ladys and open the bee ground and the cow ground. (Sorry, but name memory.) (2 keys)
3. Get the keystones from queen bee and dryad (necesserary to open both) and open the gates to cat ground and the beach. (2 keys)
4. Go down to the beach and talk to the sea princess. Then dive in the sea and search for a clam. You will find a silver pearl. Take it, after talking to the clam. Then bring it back to the slime girl. Give the pearl to her first, bevor you take the key. Then get the keys from bunny girl in cat biome and the chieftain of the orc. Now you can open the giant peak and the dessert (desert?). (3 keys)
5. Take a giant and fullfill the snake womans request to free the cave entrancen and get a new key. Then you can again use the key to unlock the cave. Dive in it and find the spider. She will give you a new quest. For that go to the door, that leads to the mystic forest.
6. Fullfill spideys quest and open the door to the demons.
That is how I solve this little quiz. The rest is up to you. Good luck (fun).

This is what I did in the end.
1. Get Winmerge or another hex editor.
2. Open your save from AppData/Local/OBF/Saved/SaveGames
3. Look for a String called PlayerWealth
4. It will be followed by the strings ArrayProperty and IntProperty
5. After IntProperty, there are 6 bytes I don't recognize
6. After these 6 bytes, there are your Orgasium, Goddess' Favors, and Keystones
7. Each of these numbers are 4 bytes little endian, change and save under a new slot
8. Load back the new slot
I used Winmerge to compare two saves that basically only differed in the number of keystones in inventory.
This is messy but the game doesn't really give you any other choice.
