I can't find my friends?

I got my friend to start the game new. We're in the same world and channel yet I don't see him(we're playing right next to each other). I try adding him on my friend list but it doesn't say he exists. Same for if he adds me.

Nevermind I thought you can move your character to different worlds but i suppose not.

Just get to the first town at level 10. then meet up
