Can't Dodge

i'm going through the tutorial, and it tells me to dodge by double-tapping A or D, but when I try my character doesn't do it. I tried the LShift thing, but that doesn't work either. I went to change the control layout, but it won't let me change the dodge control. Help?

Are you hitting them fast enough? The clicks have to be close together. I prefer double-tapping A or D, but when you use LShift, you hold it & A or D down.
