Just finished the game. Have non-spoilery thoughts
First of all, amazing experience. Going in, I did not expect all the cosmic horror hidden behind the a e s t h e t i c s The game world is terrifying and it almost never takes precedence over the story, it's all background and it doesnt jerk itself off for being clever lore. It leaves a lot of it's lore elements hidden. I still have nightmares about the lore.

It will get compared to Danganronpa. While PK is a much smaller game, It does more with its mechanics, themes, characters, and story than Danganronpa could in 3 games. The game doesn't hold your hand during the investigations. (The trials are another story. You could also see the investigation as preparation for the trial. The evidence you found and who you deem guilty are all based on the quality of your investigation. I like this approach, but I can see how some might want more out of the trial.) It does almost everything better.

The characters are WAY more fleshed out. All of them had realistic motives and actual character, not tropey signifiers. I willl be thinking about these characters for a long time. The lore isn't dumb. When it gets philosophical it doesn't veer into pseudo-philosophical high school weed sesh cringe like Danganronpa's Hope-Despair metaphysics. Even how it handles Anime influence is way more tasteful than Danganronpa. (The bad guys don't take over the world with anime ) PK isn't a weeaby mess that non-anime fans would turn away from. The Jojo-ness of the character design is so nice and follows Araki's love of high fashion culture.

The music and aesthetics my be current, but I think they make the game stand out. It nailed its aesthetics so well, that I think after the vaporwave craze dies out, it will be remembered as a good example of it.

No moon logic in the investigative process.

Is it a different game? yes. I think it's a great non-Asian take on the VN and investigation genres. I hope there is a sequel coming.

Great job Kaizen Game Works
