According to the suspect interviews, Kristy's last name is Carter. Does that name show up anywhere else?
Notice during the interview that Jack and Grace give different versions of what happened. Grace is certain she saw Kristy, but Jack claims he saw no one coming out of the apartment. A few interviews agree on the fact that Grace was sour during the party and drank a lot, so we can assume she truly saw Kristy coming out of Brian's apartment.
We learn after exploring the apartment that someone accused Brian of s. assaulting Kristy and he shared the notice he received with Grace, which explains why she was so upset.
Now we may be wondering why Jack would lie about Kristy. Well, when we first open the red bag, we discover it belongs to someone whose name is Carter. We know Kristy's name is Carter thanks to the interview, but the bag can't be hers because we also find a piece of paper about summer's school (it can't be hers since she's about to graduate).
According to a piece of paper we find in Brian's room, all the boys are 18 (and about to graduate according to the messages on the pc) except Jack. There's also medicine for asthma in the red bag, and we know that Jack left because Brian was smoking a lot (they even had a heated argument because of it). So we can safely assume the red bag could only belong to Jack.
So we learn that Jack's last name is Carter, which means he is related to Kristy. We know that the rumor about Kristy being assaulted spread around school, so it's not surprising Jack would learn about it too and plan to take revenge for his sibling.
How did he find out it was Brian? No idea.
Another thing that nods to jack is the message that states that Kristy's brothers are very protective of her.
Oh, true true!
The easiest way to catch Jack is that they make an incredibly obvious lie if you find all the evidence. He says he finished his cup and then left. His cup still has alcohol in it. If he's telling a story THAT inconsistent, he's hiding something. It's also VERY weird that we can find his bag. Even weirder? Where the hell did the gun come from? There's no place it should have been in the house.
Full Scenario Answer: This was premeditated. Jack saw Kristy leaving the apartment before he arrived with Grace. Nobody was in the apartment except for Brian. Jack presumably had brought the gun and formed the plan in advance. He stole the spare keys before Lisa got there, waited until Andrew arrived with drinks and got everyone drunk, and then waited for everyone to fall asleep without drinking. He argued with Brian about smoking (because he couldn't leave before everyone fell asleep, or his plan fell apart) and got him to isolate himself in his room.
Once everyone was asleep, he used the spare key, let himself into Brian's room, and confronted him. (If he shot Brian in his bed, he wouldn't have been by the door.) After they argued again, he shot Brian in the chest.
He's 17 and just killed someone. He was probably in a daze after committing murder. He walked out of the apartment without his bag, and didn't remember the state of his drink (or at least to empty and trash it). He left the door open as well, based on the fact Lisa saw Brian without checking on him.
During the time they were debating on what to do, the kids closed the door to Brian's room themselves, thus why it's closed when we enter. That should cover the entire scenario.
Just to add - I think Jack would have known where the spare key was as he came over prior to the party for band practice. The thing that confused me, was Jack wanted to go to the arcade, not a house party... But then I realised this was dated before the allegation
Jack's a junior, evidenced (highly suggested) by the band registration form. He's the only 17yo in the band. This is also suggested by Brian's message in the group "some of us are graduating". Since the summer school program is for rising seniors, the red bag is most likely his. That's when you can attach the surname Carter to him.
Of note, Lisa's messages with her tennis friends reveal Lisa herself as a junior/rising senior and Kristy as a senior among those who are graduating imminently.
Jack only wanted to go to the arcade before the notice of suspension went out to parents on 28 May, a form which said that not even the school knew anythng before 26 May according to the narrative.
I tend to agree, but what I don't understand is how anybody else in the apartment, Eric, Andrew, Grace, but especially Lisa, all wouldn't have been awakened by the gunshot. Nor do I understand at all Lisa's account of events after she went to bed later waking up, going to the bathroom, seeing Brian, screaming, then joined by Andrew. Say that's true, why would Eric affirm that he's the one to discover Brian, assuming his story happened after Lisa woke up.
I'll also throw in that Jack was witnessed arguing with Brian at least by Eric and his absence was noted by Andrew - both of which I think was purposeful on the part of Jack in terms of being accounted for later.
There's more. My overwhelming biggest question and why I took to the forums in the first place is:
What would Kristy have been doing at the apartment beforehand (?), and if Jack saw her like Grace says but he denies, how did Jack weigh or process that information, if by that time he was already planning on killing Brian both prior to and after seeing Kristy at the apartment when only Brian was inside? Right? Like say you're on your way to erase your sister's assaulter, and on your way to his crib you see, who else, but your sister leaving? If you're not already expecting that for some reason, wouldn't that make you think twice, if not make you scratch your head a little? And if you were expecting it, still resolved on your mission after, the list of possible reasons as to why is not very long.
Brian was someone Kristy informed the school had assaulted her. I might have missed some details but I know Brian vehemently denies it when talking with Grace, says that's why he's was forthcoming about it with her, Grace herself posits it was Kristy and assigns a motive for her to lie about it (it seems Brian wasn't even sure who lodged the accusation until then), and in the messages "offered" to talk to her about it- to which Brian cautions her not to rock the boat too hard since she's the one who can smooth things over. So personally I went on pretty sure the allegation was a fabrication. But whether it was or it wasn't, whether any contact of any kind happened between the two (implicating Brian in cheating), consensual or not, I cannot imagine how Brian and Kristy could be on visiting terms by Saturday 31 May, nor could I imagine Kristy would have been invited to show up and/or leave around the time Brian's girlfriend et al were expected to be by for the party.
Why is that all important? I think an explanation that makes at least some of that fit is (1) Kristy was actually there and Grace and Jack both saw her, which (2) Jack lied by denying he saw..
..because Kristy was her brother Jack's accomplice. (Working theory)
Kristy goes to the apartment, uninvited and unexpectedly, before the party under the color of suing for peace. Whatever they discussed (or did), it was then that Kristy swiped the spare keys before Lisa would notice them missing. (Now that I think about it, her ability to do so at least in part by knowing they existed and where to find them lends credence to the idea Brian was cheating). Jack, arriving with Grace as Kristy was leaving, knew what was afoot and would later deny to the authorities that she saw her, perhaps not even knowing Grace would be able to recognize her just by her hair (and act cold/short with Brian at the party because of it where before they were in lock-step in the light of the accusations).
Later in the evening, perhaps after Brian had locked his bedroom door from within as Jack might have expected - argument or no argument, Jack then leaves. He says he left early, and Andrew says "nobody saw him for the rest of the night" and Eric witnessed the argument between the two that "got pretty heated" I believe he intentionally left before everyone else passed out or retired to leave himself an alibi. Then Jack rendezvous with his sister who is equally interested in revenge, to collect the key at least, maybe also the weapon and bag, but he might have had those close to him all night without suspicion as an asthmatic prone to allergies.
Then the rest goes how everyone else recalls (or tries to recall) in the police interviews.
It's not airtight, but it's my headcanon that plugs up a few holes that were left for me personally. Maybe Kristy had nothing to do with it and Jack only left because of his allergies having already swiped the keys, and maybe when exactly he had his bag either before or after his hiatus isn't something that ultimately matters. But that little bit about Kristy being there continues to bother me.
The holes in my theory admittedly, are big: Jack could have pretty easily pulled everything off without help, and him stealing the keys is probably easier when you're actually an invited guest and there are more people to distract. Nothing seems to definitely suggest one way or another when Jack had his bag, but again since that's true, it's likely immaterial.
My theory doesn't plug the other slight inconsistencies like reconciling Lisa's account of after she woke up with *Eric's account after Andrew splashed him awake. Also I'm not sure I solved Andrew's state/whereabouts either. According to him he went from partying to puking, to going to wake *Eric either before or after rushing over to Lisa after she saw Brian. And again, since seemingly everyone else was present inside that small apartment, I can't figure out how a gun could be fired without alerting one of the attendees no matter how sauced they were, but that's the easiest concession to make.
My theory does simplify how Jack finally found out it was Brian who was accused. If they were in cahoots, he could have been told really at any time after the last friendly communication to/with Brian. But if not then at the very least, even if Kristy herself committed to keeping it secret from her family and friends, a copy of the notice of suspension that names Brian, was sent to parents on 28 May, with a conference scheduled for 30 May, the night before the party. It's just induction but it's easy to see how at least over those days the name would reach Jack, just as it's easy to know that he at least knew about the assault as early as 29 May when the rumor reached Grace via Lillian, who told Andrew by the next day.. if not as early as 26 May when the school was notified.. if not as early as the preceding week that Kristy missed from school because of the alleged assault.
I actually think Kristy was involved in the murder. (see above)
Nice theory!
