bear or boar? ... there are no bears in the game, bear hide is bought at the monestary in southern Sherwood.

Bear Hide drops from the Spirits of the Forest (same dudes that drop the Wolf Hide)
But I think you have to kill them in the Peak District. (and I think Midland ones do too?)
And you can Hunt Boars in both the Peak District and the Midlands. :)
