Gathering wood is so obtuse...
Is this a bug? 2 minutes into the demo, Tuck told me to go grab wood to make a bow. I took my dull hatchet and regular hatchet into the woods and tried hacking at trees. It didn't seem to have any effect, regardless of which hatchet I used. I then saw a thread that said it can take 15 swings to chop down a tree so I persevered, even though there are no "impact" noise being made. Gave up then found another thread that I can only chop "glowing green" trees. I wandered around town with my hatchet out, never found any glowing trees. Wandered out of town and into the woods for 5-10 minutes; never found any glowing trees. Nothing seems choppable. Finally realized that a 2nd "marker" had appeared on my navigation compass. After wasting 15 minutes, I finally found the 10 or so "special" trees. I know survival games have perverse pleasure in creating awful interfaces but seriously, this is actively hostile to the user.

Yeah, I had this experience as well. The choice to have only certain saplings be "choppable" is another poor choice on the game developers part.

Marked trees should show up at the time when the task started. We'll check this out if there is a problem. Thank you for the comment and your opinion :)

Just hold down the mouse button until the tree is down. It's not that hard. As soon as you put skills in tree chopping (or whatever it is called) it doesnt take that long anymore.

Also you have to stand close enough! If you do not damage the tree it will never go down! I found that rather funny when I mentioned it :)

It's also faster with hatchets that are not dull.

The trees are marked as soon as you put on the axe/hatchet.

There should be 2 different types of axe in the game. Battle axe and a wood cutting axe with its own propper side swing animation. Also the pickaxe animation is bad, it should be a two handed over head swing animation.

One thing that seems very strange is that dull axe and dull pickaxe last longer than the good ones...

We appreciate you bringing our attention to these points! I'll be sure to let our team know about your ax suggestion. Thank you for the report!

If the 'task' is to make a bow, then not all trees are suitable to make a bow let alone a good bow. Only trees/saplings of certain diameter and free of branches for the length of the bow stave will be appropriate. Knots in the wood cause weakness in the bow.

So the 'make a bow' task currently does reflect reality better, but whether it is implemented well in game is another issue. I'm just downloading demo atmo, good luck devs!

There are certain trees that you are able to chop down. That is not explained well in the quest but only certain tree can be harvested and they are glowing green when you have the axe in hand. I kinda wish you could chop down any tree but that would allow for people to clear cut and remove the style of the game. They may want to have the quest giver state only certain trees can be used and they are marked on the minimap to give an excuse as to why only certain trees can be harvested for wood.

Description of the quest and its explanation surely can be improved, we are aware of players opinions but we don't want to change it completely because marked trees have a purpose :) But we will try to improve this in the future, maybe find the perfect solution to please players who have different views on this topic.

Marking trees only has a purpose if you are purposefully limiting the respawn of trees to very limited areas.
In Valheim, Medeval Dynasty and New World as 3 examples you can chop down trees wherever they are growing apart from specific tree types in Valheim Swamp and Mistlands for example.

I'm wanting to upgrade Smith and furnace says I need birch but I can only find beech and pine even though tool tip says it is in Barnsdale. Same with limestone but found clay stone and sandstone. Am I just over looking the birch and limestone or are they in the locked areas.

Id rather not have to make a new bow every 45 mins hopefully the actual game makes repairing more accessible than to just randomly loot a repair kit.

The Birch trees can be found near the quest "A Secret Ally" but I have some difficulty cutting them down since the axe or I, is not strong enough...
