Where do you get a pick axe or an axe? I tried to buy them or make them and no luck. Please help?

You don´t need to get the tools, just go next to the tree or stone and use it to harvest the ressource.

okay. Odd, I tried 3 different trees and nothing happened. Is there a spacific tree I need to collect from?

Yeah, harvestable ones will be marked, glowing a bit, with particle effect, and when you come near them, it will say to press e. Not always easy to spot, but you'll see. Same thing with ore outcroppings.
At the start, you'll be able to cut only pine trees, but as you level up woodcutting, you'll also be able to cut birch and then ash trees.

"You don't need tools" you don't need them for chopping trees or mining but you do need pickaxes for a quarry.
