Name CHANGE Mod
Saw a few people asking for a way to change Sholmes to Holmes and so on, so I thought I'd point out there's a mod that does that. Works for PC as far as I can tell. but I haven't played the whole game with it.

This mods replaces texts in all chapters by using custom scripts.
What was changed:
"Herlock" -> "Sherlock"
"Sholmes" -> "Holmes"
"Wilson" -> "Watson"

...that's not what censoring is lol
SlashSlayer Aug 17, 2021 @ 11:59am
it's not working for me. it's at least not compatible with old saves
SlashSlayer Aug 17, 2021 @ 12:02pm
alright, i didn't double check and take back what i said. it is working, it's just the patch that it's very poorly made and only replaces cases in which it's specifically written "Sholmes" to "Holmes", for example. so in cases like a character screaming "SHOOOOLMES" no change will occur

Yeah, and the jokes about the name make no sense, and neither does the English VO, but it's there if anyone wants it.

it's definitely more of a proof of concept than an end all be all fix, hopefully he works on it more

The name of Herlock Sholmes is not a censorship.

It refers to the parody/mockery of Sherlock Holmes in "Arsène Lupin", where Herlock is discribed as a brillant, but arrogant detective. Maurice Leblanc, the writer of Arsene Lupin was quite often called the "French Conan Doyle". But he hated the british character, so he produced a version of his own.

Of course he could'nt use that name, therefore the little change... Funny enough Capcom might have used it for the same reason : Arsene Lupin is under public domain, Sherlock Holmes not completely.

And If you wanna know how japanese autors knew about Lupin... The culprit might be him : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C2ZsWobs68

Lupin the Third. First anime in 1977.

Also, Sherlock Holmes is the best detective. What's the point of bringing him in the game, solving the case instead of us ? While Herlock Sholmes is goofy, arrogant... It makes better sense.

I understand your point, but in the original japanese game, his name is indeed Sherlock Holmes.

It's a required censorship due to the Doyle Estate being a bunch of dung swallowers, as giasof said and honestly as you probably already knew, his name in the original script was Sherlock Holmes. This is how Shu Takumi envisioned Sherlock Holmes after reading the original books, it's not just him taking the piss out of the character and making fun of him or whatever. Dude is a legitimate Sherlock Holmes fan, the duology has a ton of references to the books that makes it clear the guy knows his stuff, he just wanted to have fun by making him a goofy character. If you don't like the Ace Attorney spin on the character that's fine, but he IS meant to be Sherlock Holmes.

except in the original voices (japanese) it's clearly Sherlock Holmes and not Herlock Sholmes.

Under my nose, Scarlet Study[github.com] released a mod that changed all the character names to their romanized counterparts that you see in their translation.

They have future plans for the mod, including giving the option to choose what names you want for the characters, and giving the option to use their translation.

There is also another guy steadily working on his own name change mod that will only change Sherlock and Watson back, but will edit the assets and some other dialogue to match with the change. (Which is in Scarlet Study's plan, but hasn't been implemented yet.)

We are already on the cusp of a definitive version of this game! I hadn't seen any updates in the steam forums, so I thought it all died, but it's been happening. I hope Scarlet Study updates their mod soon.

This game already is the definitive version lol. Name changes were unavoidable and for a good reason. There really is nothing to “fix” in that regard lmao
