there is a difference between a Mary sue, and a character who's good at doing things.

while i do agree that it's weird a child her age does what she does very good, she's by no means a Mary sue. a Mary sue lacks any flaws, which isn't the case with Iris.
I haven't made it all the way through to the end yet. Looking forward to seeing how she is just a human after all.

i'm not sure how to explain it, but when it comes to iris, she's really not a mary sue. at the very least, she's not a mary sue in the traditional sense.

Her great capacities can make her a relatively unrelatable character, but she isn't a Mary Sue at all.

How so?

Iris is only ten years old when we meet her in the game, and from the start, she already is introduced as a very mature and intelligent girl for her age. For instance, is a biographer, an inventor, and a medical doctor. She is shown to not possess any sort of flaw for a big part of the game. This is what I meant when I said that she could be considered to be a rather unrelatable character, compared to other characters in the game's cast. I don't know where exactly you've gotten to yet, but you will soon see, especially in Resolve, that Iris isn't a flawless character. Not to the extent of calling her a Mary Sue, at least, according to the correct definition. I'm not going into details, as I wouldn't want to spoil anything.
Perfection. Thank you for holding back. I haven't got through to the end of the game yet, so I'll reserve judgement.

I'm up to this bit

She's not unrelatable, she's impossible.

Weird to say it like that but I find her dialogue and dynamic with Sholmes pretty endearing for the most part, she acts her age most of the time and her character isn't in the focus a lot so I don't mind that she's a super genius.

That's understandable, then. I used to have a similar opinion at this stage of the game, and I wasn't very fond of her as a character, until she somehow grew on me towards the end, proceeding to become one of my favourite characters in the game. Many also agree to say that she feels much more human in Resolve, as her tropes were toned down.
Have a good playthrough!
Happy to admit I was wrong. I completely misread this character.
I do appreciate how they designed her with that pair of loops in her hair. It feels like I'm working with Pearl again

You're not familiar enough with the Japanese if you question the character of Iris. Japan LOVES little girls and inserts them every chance they get no matter how ridiculous the idea is.

Yeah, I thought she was a bit much too, especially at the end of 1-5 when she's somehow able to translate just enough Japanese morse code to recognize the name of the main characters' dead friend. She's comparable to Pearl in that they're both prodigies at what they do, but at least Pearl still acts like a child and doesn't have near-infinite knowledge of things that just happen to be relevant to cases. But I think Iris is forgivable, not just because of the way they eventually toned her down and gave her flaws but because of her relationship with Holmes. I think it's really funny how they basically take turns handling the "parent" brain cell. It's that dynamic that really matters.
Yep I agree. I'm midway through Resolve and have completely changed my mind about the character.

Had a similar experience! Started off pretty wary of Iris, but by the end...

Kid characters usually make me cringe because they're either a) incredibly obnoxious or b) incredibly competent beyond their years to the point of absurdity.

Happy, GAA continues the Ace Attorney trend of creating kid characters I actually quite like!
