Games have always had preload, just not every game.
the only game i have pre-ordered before this is ace attorney trilogy
Tl;dr Unless you have an SSD and powerful CPU, Steam preloads aren’t even worth it.
This is so off-the-wall that it's actually hilarious. The Steam client was built with preloads in mind from the very beginning. The first game to ever require Steam, Half-Life 2, offered preloading back in 2004! The other platforms took ages to catch up.
Preloading has been common on Steam for almost two decades by now.
