1.14.2.2 Causing my PC to Freeze
Hello all,

I have well over a thousand hours in this game, and I love it a lot. I was a major fan of CK2, and had preordered CK3 when it was announced.

However, the current issue I am having with the latest update I have no seen before. The game doesn't crash, it freezes my whole computer. I am able to move the cursor, but I hear sounds playing in intervals of a second or less, like stuttering. My PC does not crash, as I can still see the screen, and everything is "operating" but I cannot escape the frozen screen without a hard restart of my PC because my keyboard is not responding to CTRL+ALT+Delete. According to my Event Viewer, I get "Event ID 10016" about three times, each less than a second from each other at the time my PC freezes. According to Microsoft, Event ID 10016 is benign and doesn't interfere with any of my PC's hardware, nor indicate any issue with the hardware. So the issue is not on my end, nor my cause.

Although I was playing with a Discord stream in the background for the first two instances (we're at 5-6 now over the last three days), this hasn't caused the issue. Because I have not played with a stream since then. I also had played with just three basic mods (Clear Notifications, Console Access, and one other) when it froze today (writing this at 2:09 PM EST, and the most recent event was 1:56 PM EST.) I played earlier today from at least 11:30 AM EST to 1:00 PM EST on version 1.14.1 without issue. I just switched back to 1.14.2.2 at 12.58 PM EST, and thus played for ~60 minutes until it froze.

Due to the significant reduction in mods (I don't play with very many to begin with), rollback to 1.14.1 (which produced no issues on that version), and being informed by Microsoft and my PC that there is nothing wrong with my hardware (also proven by this issue not happening with anything but CK3's latest update), I have determined that it must be the latest update.

Is anyone else having this issue? Have they fixed it, or not? Is Paradox aware?

UPDATE: It just occurred again on 1.14.1 at 3:07 PM EST.

I have exactly the same problem. The only crutch I've found is to make a save and restart the game from time to time, every hour or hour and a half. I have no idea what the reasons are.

My specs:
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics 3.20 GHz
RAM 16.0 GB DDR5
Video card: RTX 3070 mobile 8 GB
Did you recently update to 24H2? I'm having the same issue starting late December. I thought it was due to me playing with mods (I onlyplayed vanilla before), but I've been having this issue even though I only use one mod TFE. I haven't tested with just vanilla, but considering everything I think it would still crash.

It's either something broke between windows and CK3. Did all the troubleshooting I could except rolling back my windows which is past its "rollback" period anymore.
There is a forum run by the game company itself that will help you come up with a solution to run the game with ANY possible rig that meets minimum specs (they will not with mods though; there are literally thousands of fan made ones and you have to try with the author/poke at the code yourself for those).

That forum site is:

Good Luck.
+1 Exactly the same problem mate
I stopped playing for a week like I always do and played two days ago and this happened were my screen would freeze. And had to reboot PC> nothing works. nothing.

I then deleted my old saved games. All of them.. except the files i started two days ago and changed to that vulkan setting in the graphics settings and now it works.

If you have Windows 11, probably update 24h2 is the problem. I installed a clean Win 11 in november and could play with freezes being rare. Sometimes playing for 3 days without a freeze but now it's unplayable and Paradox is aware so basically we need to wait for Microsoft to do something, it's been months and no fix yet

Same here. Made my PC freeze completely and had to shut it down from the power button.

Try the program Processor Lasso. I created a rule, when the CPU load reaches 90% the number of cores used by the game is reduced by 4, when 99% by 6 more. So far the PC did not freeze, the game crashed sometimes - but no more and not that often.
