Stuck in succession

Played through a couple generations then I had my king die while he was on a grand tour, the succession screen opened and htne instantly disappeared. I couldnt do anything so I reloaded. Now im stuck in pause with a 'cannot play the game until succession is decided' even though I am playing as the former kings son. I think the save file is bricekd.
