Yea i don't like it either.
I don't know about you but i haven't had any crashes since
The game itself even felt less laggy.
What did I do?
I've disabled my old fixed set sized swap file ( page file ) on my HDD and enabled a system managed swap file on my SSD where Crusader Kings 3 is installed.
Even though I have 16GB of ram and CK3 barely scratches at 10, this funky game needs you to have a swap file enabled...
I had it. But the game crashed when the swap file was on a HDD.
Testing results::
- CK3 on HDD :: SWAP File on HDD -----> Sporadic Autosave Crashing.
- CK3 on SSD :: SWAP File on HDD -----> Sporadic Autosave Crashing.
- CK3 on SSD :: SWAP File on SSD with its size set to system managed ----> No crashes in 8h
FINALLY. It's been to long. CK3 without autosave crashes.
All thanks to Slowdive who helped us pooling our resources about this issue.
TL:DR
CK3 needs you to have a system managed swap/page file enabled on the drive of its installation. Possibly both game AND swap file on the same SSD drive.
NONE OF WHAT YOU SAYS MATTERS BECAUSE THE GAME DEVELOPERS DONT GIVE A ♥♥♥♥ ABOUT US, THOSE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PIECES OF ♥♥♥♥, HOPE THEY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DIE
Dude...
The issue was identified and solved.
Chill.
It varies slightly depending on your OS.
Just google how to set up a swap file. Make sure you do it on the drive letter of the SSD you have CK3 installed and set it to WINDSOWS MANAGED. Apply and your OS will ask you to restart. Done.
Not sure if this will fix the problem for me? I'm having the same constant issue... ever since installation of Legends of the Dead expansion. But my system is 64GB of RAM. I doubt the game is using THAT much??? How big was your swap file? How much RAM you have?
EDIT: I did as you said... and did a fresh install and deleted all user files (saves etc) and the game still crashes. Damn.... this is messed up. Any other suggestions?
For feedback, I used to play this game for hours and rarely-if-ever had a crash playing without the latest update (Legends of the Dead). I've never done any kind of modding. I deleted the User files so it's a fresh install of the game. I have the PC managed swap set up on the hard drive with the game installation and it's on a MVe 2.0 SSD. 64GB RAM, RTX 4070... There is really no reason other than poor developer patches that should cause these issues. I'm not sure if I can get a refund on the latest content (or if that will even fix the issue), but I'll see if I can disable the content?
I just loaded the fresh game and went to setup my settings and clicking accept crashed the game. :(((
I also using only SSD and i have the same problem. How much RAM do you have?
After a long play and monthly saves (because crashes sometimes happens on autosave or even randomly). I noticed the game crashes every monthly autosave. After turning on the game again, it was going ok for the last month I lost +1 additional month and crashed again.
I finally got curious and found this topic.
But before I tried anything what others tried, I checked something more simple.
I did the same some other times before, but I was lazy enough to not bother myself if it's connected.
Today (and a few other times before at different days) with the game also steam crashed, without any warning, pop up, alert, anything, just shut down completely.
And that is exactly when the game starts to run without crashes again.
Seeing it today I though about other times and yes, I did close steam myself and turned it on to help with the issue.
Sometimes, when the game crashes, my Steam crashes too. Maybe there is really a problem with the Steam, but I don't think that's the only cause. I've tried launching the game directly by using the CK3.exe file. It seams like the game runs a bit more stable, but still crashes after a couple of months (couple of savings).
I've tried to follow this advice, and this is the way how did it work for me:
SWAP File on the DISK where you installed your CK3 with its size set to system managed ---> Switch off your Steam App ---> Run CK3 directly using the CK3.exe file. ---> I had no crashes for couple of days already.
I would like to draw your attention:
If you have your CK3 instaled on the DISK D (etc.) so you have to manage SWAP File on the DISK D. I mean directly to the disk on which it is installed.
I still do not know if it works with Steam App on... For the last days I play only with Steam App switched off.
I haven't had any crashes since moving my CK3 to a SSD partition and enabling a system managed swap file there.
Would kinda stink if the developers patched the game into incompatibility with systems without SSDs when those aren't listed as a requirement on the steam store.
