RNG is very important
Just tried a campaign as Alfred the Great. My brother had a daughter just before he died, so instead of me becoming King, I became a vassal to this toddler queen. I try to form a faction to put me on the throne, but it never gets big enough. I would get around 88% and then other vassals would just leave and my strength would drop. As regent I tried swinging the scales of power, but by the time she was 10 years old I was only at level 4. I had all the vassals loving me, and most had a negative opinion of her, but still couldn't get the faction power I needed. Any murder scheme would give me 130+ stress since Alfred is just and honest. Also I like to try and make choices based on that character and their traits, so Alfred would never even think about killing his niece. When she was 12 she enacted the Danelaw, and betrothed herself to some prince from a duchy in Wales. Seeing as this campaign was already well going to crap, I decided to start over.

New game, My brother dies within 1 year, no children, I become King. RNG is everything.

Alfred deposed his nephew but would not kill him even though everyone advised him have the nephew have an accident. He was honest and just. One of the very few in those ages.
